My Website: https://colonial-us.weebly.com/

Choosing your Website

The first step in designing a website is to chose which tools you will use.

According to Trimble, “Several free, online tools can help you create a website without needing

to directly code the pages themselves” (Trimble, L. 2017). I have chosen to use a site called

Weebly. According to Trimble, “Weebly for Education allows teachers to set up student accounts

for a full class and choose whether to make the student sites public or password protected, giving

teachers full control over the websites” (Trimble, L. 2017). Weebly is user friendly and has the

ability to be used with students, this is why I chose to use Weebly to make my website. Prior to

allowing students to use Weebly (to make their own sites), you must first get approval from your

district and/or administrator (Trimble, L. 2017). The following provides a step by step guide on

how to create a site using Weebly.

Getting an Account and Choosing a Theme

− Go to weebly .com.

− Get started by clicking on, “Make a Website”.

− This will prompt you to sign up. You may use Facebook or Google. I used my

WGU Google account. I do not suggest using Facebook to sign in, as this may

cause later issues with your personal and professional information being

connected. It is best to keep these separate (Barreto, J. E., & Whitehair, C. L.

2017).

− Once you are signed in you will see an edit option. Click, “edit”.

− Select, “Choose from a theme”.

[TASK 1] 3

− Select a theme you like.

− Click, “Start Editing”.

Choosing a Domain Name

− The site will now load while it “builds” your website.

− You will be asked to choose a domain name.

− Type in your desired website name. If it is already being used, you will be given

some alternative ideas.

− Select the name you like the best.

− The free version of the site will include the subdomain name, .weebly.com. If you

do not want to include a subdomain name, you may purchase a premium account.

Otherwise, select “yes” and you may begin editing your website.

Setting up the Main Page

− Click on the title of the main page and customize it to your liking, this title will

remain there for each subpage.

− To add text/adjust text on the main page, choose from the menu on the left side to

select the font, color, size, and style of the text. You can also underline, bold, and

italicize words from this menu.

Setting up the Pages

− At the top of the site there is a pages tab, click that.

− This will open up your pages menu. From here you can name the pages, add

pages, and delete pages.

− To go to the page you made, just select it at the top from any page you are

currently on. You can then further adjust your page.

[TASK 1] 4

Adjusting the Background/Adding an Image

− To edit the background, click on the image.

− The background box will pop up.

− Click, “replace” and then “select image”.

− A new box will open.

− Select, “image url” and copy and paste the url from an image you want to use.

You may also upload a picture from one you have saved on your computer.

− To edit the background color, select “color” instead of image.

− This will open a new menu with many different colors. If you want a more

specific color, click the arrow on the bottom right. This will open more colors to

choose from. Select the color you like. This will change the color automatically.

Adding a link for additional websites

− Click on the link button and adjust the text, style, position, and button color.

− Select the link tab, then the downward facing arrow to select what type of media

you are linking to. I chose a url. Copy and past it into the space provided. This

will make a hyperlink on the button.

Publish

− When you are happy with your website. Click “Publish” at the top right corner.

− This will open a loading bar. It should only take a minute or so.

− Once it has loaded, a menu will come up and give you the option to share your

site. You may click one of the sharing options, or just exit out of the menu.

− Your site is now ready for use.

[TASK 1] 5

− Make sure you visit your site by typing it into a new browser. Make sure all of the

links work, and all of your text is visible.

− Any editing can be done by signing back into your Weebly account, making

changes, and then republishing.
