Chairperson Organising Secretary CHRISTIAN MEDICAL COLLEGE, VELLORE The Christian Medical College had its humble beginning in 1900 when Dr Ida Sophia Scudder started a single bedded clinic.
This has now grown into a top-ranking
multi-speciality tertiary care centre with more 2800 beds for in-patients and over 8000 outpatients are treated daily in the DDr R IDA Ida S SCUDDERFounder B Scudder, , FOUNDER main hospital and in peripheral units. 1870 – 1960
The Hospital has more than 50 departments having super specialties in all branches of medicine including Radiation Oncology.
At present, there are postgraduate diploma courses in 11 specialties and postgraduate
degree courses in 24 specialties. This institution has been a pioneer in India in the development of Community Based Education as well as in higher specialties like Cardiology, Thoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Haematology.
The college currently offers 17 higher specialty courses. In addition, Masters Courses are offered in the specialties of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Medical Physics, Public Health, Bioengineering and Clinical Engineering and M.Phil in Hospital and Health Systems Management. DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY
The department of Radiation Oncology was started when Dr Ida Bella Scudder, niece of our founder, treated a patient with radium source on the eve of Christmas in year 1939. Since then the department has not looked back and is now and leading cancer centre in the country with the 'state of the art' treatment techniques such as Volumetric Modulated Radiotherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Total Body Irradiation. The department is equipped with two linear accelerators, a telecobalt unit, advanced treatment planning systems, CT Simulator and a HDR brachytherapy unit.
On the academic side, the department has post-graduate programmes in Radiation
Oncology and Medical Physics, doctoral programme in Medical Physics and a degree programme in Radiotherapy Technology. Our centre is a leading cancer institute in the country with facilities ranging from conventional radiation techniques to the latest high precision Radiation Therapy techniques such as 3D conformal, VMAT, IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SRT, SBRT, Total Body Irradiation and Total Skin Electron Therapy.
