Part One – Creative Writing

Write on one of the following topics. At the head of your composition put the number of the topic you have chosen.
Your essay should be written on the school test pad.
You are advised to spend about 60 minutes on this part of the paper and to write between 350 and 500 words.
Total marks for this part : 30.
Up to 15 marks are available for the language of your answer, and up to 15 marks for the content of your
writing.

1 Write a story in which a small painting plays an important role.


2 Crowds.
3 Write a story which includes the sentence: ‘I realised only at the last minute that I had forgotten something
important’.
4 Do you think it is possible for celebrities to have private lives? Give reasons and examples to support your
view.
5 Describe an event in which an unexpected incident happened.

Part Two – Directed Writing


Begin your answer on a fresh page. Your essay should be written on the school test pad.
You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this part of the paper, using between 200 – 300 words.
Total marks for this part : 30
Up to 15 marks are allocated for task fulfilment, and 15 marks for language.
Recently a plan was announced about the building of a new road which will pass through part of your area. Most
residents support the plan but others are against it. You are in favour of the plan but understood both points of view.
You decide to write a letter to your local newspaper to make clear your own ideas.

Write your letter. You must include the following:


 Why most people like the plan for the new road
 Why other people object to it
 What changes to the plan could be made to satisfy those who do not like it

Cover all three points above in detail. You should make the letter polite and persuasive. Start your letter ‘Dear Editor’,
and remember to add an appropriate ending.
