Ans.-1) The concentration of A in the gas is constant ( Cai =0.

2 kmol/m3 ) while it is very dilute in B liquid

phase thus, creating a concentration difference which acts as the driving force and eventually leads to
the formation of a film as per the film theory for absorption . Also, A in phase B converts to C
irreversibly. Thus, A is diffusing in B and then some of it is converting to C . Hence , we can formulate the
basic equation as :-

Input rate - Output rate = Rate of depletion due to reaction

Na|z - Na|z+dz = dz*1*Ra

where, Ra =k * Ca

Ca is the concentration of A in phase B

Cai is the concentration of A at the interface i.e. in gas.

So, using Fick’s law ,

Da * ( d2 Ca / dz2 ) = k * Ca ---------- (1)

Also, putting boundary conditions and taking the input variable distance as “z” :-

Ca=Cai (conc. At interface ) z=0

Ca=Ca (bulk B) at z= d i.e. 0.4 cm

Solving this O.D.E and taking bulk conc. of A as very dilute (negligible w.r.t. gas) , we get

Ca= (1/sinh @) * [ sinh { @ - z (√k/Da) } ] * Cai

where , @2 = d2 * [k/Da]

Hence, putting different z values , we can get the concentration of A at different points .
