Revision Tutorial

This document contains revision questions and solutions on topics related to geotechnical engineering. It includes 5 questions related to soil classification, compaction specifications, stress variations with depth, and consolidation settlement calculations. The final question provides a diagram of a footing on a clay layer and asks to calculate the change in vertical effective stress and estimate consolidation settlement.

Question (1):

Question (2):
A contractor has compacted the base course for a new road and found that the mean value of the
test sample shows 𝑤𝑐 = 14.6%, 𝐺𝑠 = 2.81 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛾𝑏 = 18.2 𝐾𝑁⁄𝑚3 . The specifications require
that e ≤ 0.80. Has the contractor compiled with the specifications?
Question (3):
Given the results of sieve analysis and Atterberg limits, classify each soil according to the
Unified classification system.
Question (4):

Question (5):
A cohesion less soil deposit (as shown in the figure). Plot the variation of total stress, pore water
pressure and effective stress with depth.
For that soil, 𝐺𝑠 = 2.65, 𝑒 = 0.5, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑆 = 50% 𝑖𝑛 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑍𝑜𝑛𝑒.
Solution:

𝐺𝑠 +𝑆.𝑒
𝛾 = 𝛾𝑤 × 1+𝑒

2.65 + 0.0
𝛾𝑑𝑟𝑦 = 9.81 × = 17.3 𝐾𝑁⁄𝑚3
1 + 0.5
2.65 + 0.5 × 0.5
𝛾𝑤𝑒𝑡 (𝑎𝑡 𝑆 = 50%) = 9.81 × = 18.97 𝐾𝑁⁄𝑚3
1 + 0.5
2.65 + 1 × 0.5
𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 (𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝐺. 𝑊. 𝑇. ) = 9.81 × = 20.60 𝐾𝑁⁄𝑚3
1 + 0.5

Calculate the Stresses at point 1, 2 and 3 as follows:

Point 𝝈 = ∑𝜸𝒉 + 𝒒 𝒖 = 𝜸𝒘 𝒉𝒘 𝝈
̅ = 𝝈−𝒖
1 0 0 0
Just above Point 2: u =
𝝈
̅ = 𝟑𝟒. 𝟔𝟎
0.0
2 17.3 × 2.0 = 34.6 Just below Point 2: u = -
𝜸𝒘 𝒉𝒘 𝑺 = −9.81 × 1 × 𝝈
̅ = 𝟑𝟗. 𝟓𝟏
0.5 = −4.91
34.6 + 18.97 × 1
3 0.0 53.57
= 53.57
53.57 + 20.6 × 2
4 9.81 × 2.0 = 19.62 75.15
= 94.77
Question (6):
For the footing shown in figure, calculate the change in the vertical effective stress (Δơ) beneath
the footing due to structural loading at the middle of the clay layer.
Also estimate the consolidation settlement for this clay layer knowing that Pre-consolidation.
Pressure is equal to 100 KN/m2.
