Group Lab Report Statement

This document outlines the requirements for a group lab report on geotechnical testing. It will be 10% of the total grade. Groups of up to 6 students will test 3 soil samples, conducting tests like standard proctor, sand cone, and consolidation on samples 1, 2, and 3 respectively. They must report the results, calculations, plots, and interpretations in a professional report by week 12. An individual discussion and practical exam will also be required that week.

Group Lab Report

(10% of Total = 75% Report + 25% Individual Discussion)

General Notes

 A maximum of six (6) students can be assigned to each group.

 Students should select their groups until end of week 2, after that the remaining students will
be randomly allocated to a group.
 The individual lab contribution will be closely monitored for each member in a group.
 A professional geotechnical report is required (deadline is week 12).
 Charts must be plotted using excel.
 Make only necessary assumptions in soil geometry and properties if needed.

Problem Statement

 Each group will be given three soil samples: Samples # 1, #2, and #3.

A) For Sample # 1, it is required to:

1) conduct standard or modified proctor test (5 tests) [10 marks]
2) draw the dry unit weight versus water content curve [10 marks]
3) determine the maximum dry unit weight and OMC [5 marks ]
4) draw and comment on the 90% saturation and zero air void lines [10 marks]
5) compare the results with the field results if (γd field) = 19.5 kN/m3 [10 marks]

B) For Sample # 2, it is required to:

1) conduct the sand cone test (5 points) [10 marks]
2) calculate the field dry unit weight (γd field) [5 marks]

C) For Sample # 3, it is required to:

1) Perform the 1-D consolidation test (5 load increments) [10 marks]
2) Draw the void ratio/strain results against log of stress [10 marks]
3) calculate pre-consolidation pressure [10 marks ]
4) use the square root time method to calculate (Cv) [5 marks]
5) use the log-time method to calculate (Cv) [5 marks]

Submission Requirements and Practical Exam

 The outline of the geotechnical report is expected to include: table of contents, introduction,
test procedures, test data sheets, calculations, plotting of results and interpretation,
discussion of the test results, and conclusions.
 Any assumptions made during testing or analysis should be clearly shown.
 Deadline for report submission and individual discussion is in week 12 during the lecture
and tutorial time.
 No late reports are accepted.
 The Practical exam (weights another 10% of the Total) can include questions regarding the
work done in the laboratory and the submitted report.
 The Practical exam will be conducted on the same day of report submission (i.e., week 12)
during the lecture and tutorial time in the soil laboratory.
