Characteristics
The OA 58XX routers are modular devices that combine router and switch functions in a single
device. These have been designed for the professional segment and emphasis security among
their advanced features. The OA 58XX routers incorporate encryption hardware and wireless
possibilities both in the LAN as well as the LAN and consequently have internal slots for
802.11/b/g/n connectivity and for 3G/4G connectivity respectively.
The OA 58XX executes the ALU ESR-OS, which runs over all our router families and is
characterized by a wide variety of functionalities they support and especially orientated to satisfy
the access requirements to corporate data networks. Some of the outstanding features available
with ESR-OS are the management capacity, the possibility to implement Quality of Service
mechanisms, both at the link layer as well as at the network layer, security mechanisms and the
possibility to create Virtual Private Networks through IPSec or L2TP as well as an extensive
range of protocols and IP routing functionalities.
The OA 58XX router family can be expanded by using a PMC card which means you can
increase the range of interfaces in the device.
This manual shows you how to install and connect these devices.
Power supply
For further information on the different power supplies in the OA 58XX router family, please see
the chapter on “Components and power supplies”, in the section on “Power Supply”.
The only way to monitor the OA 58XX router family hardware is through the LEDs on the front

Installation in a rack
The OA 58XX can be installed in a 19” rack. To do this you require two plastic strips as can be
seen in the figure. The strips and the associated screws are not included in the basic packet and
need to be acquired separately.
Both strips are attached to the device through 8 screws, 4 on each side, as indicated in the figure.
Power Source
Additionally, the OA 58XX router can incorporate an optional card to inject PoE through the 8-
port Switch. In this case, the device is served from an AC/DC external power source to power
the said module.
• Excessive cold and heat should be avoided, as should humidity and dust.
• Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided as well as other heat sources. The device
should not be placed amongst papers, magazines or other elements that could hinder
natural air circulation.
• The device should not be placed very close to strong electromagnetic fields such as
speakers, engines, etc.
• Knocks and/or strong vibrations should be avoided during transport, operation and
storage.
To connect the power cable to the device, execute the steps given in the section on "Connecting".
It is highly recommended that all interconnected communication devices are plugged to THE
SAME GROUNDED POWER OUTLET, which should at the same time be of good quality
(lower than 10 ohmios).
Whether the workplace is provided with an uninterrupted power supply system (UPS), regulated
supply or it is independent from the rest (such as lighting, etc.); it is highly recommended that all
data devices should be connected to the same power source. This will avoid operating and
premature aging problems of drivers and other components.

Microswitches
The OA 58XX router has a block of 8 useful microswitches available, located on the underside
of the device, which are used for maintenance and test tasks.
So the device operates correctly, all the microswitches must be in the OFF position.
The default configuration for the router establishes the access IP and mask address as follows:
• IP address: 192.168.1.1
• IP mask: 255.255.255.0
Some devices leave the factory with personalized settings for the customer. This
personalization may imply that the establishment of a default configuration may differ
from the one indicated above.
This procedure is applied if you have to discard the whole configuration of the device, for
example, if you cannot remember the password.

The OA 58XX router incorporates an 8-port 10/100BaseT Switch with automatic MDI/MDIX to
connect to a local area network (LAN).
Please pay careful attention to the labeling so you do not confuse this switch with other types of
ports:
GE0/GE1Connections
The OA 58XX router has two interfaces to connect to Ethernet networks. Each interface has a
metallic connector (10/100/1000 Base-T). The GE0/GE1ports are independent to the Switch.
Please pay careful attention to the labeling so you do not confuse this switch with other types of
ports:
The OA 58XX router has a USB HOST 2.0 interface with a type A connector which permits
USB 3G modems to be connected. The interface is activated through the corresponding software
license.
The OA 58XX router has a RJ45 female connector on the front panel referred to as “Conf.”
which provides access to the device local console.
For further information, please see the section on "Connecting to the device".
The OA 58XX router has two connectors to connect the Wireless WAN antennas. These two
antennas are used by the Wireless WAN module. This module is optional and it’s possible that
your device does not have 3G and consequently does not incorporate antennas.
To assemble and dismantle the antennas, simply screw them into the connectors labeled WWAN
located at the rear of the device.
So that the WWAN interfaces are operative, the device must have a plug-in 3G card. Depending
on the model, the antennas are installed in the device at the factory. If your device does not have
the module incorporated, you can obtain this later on. The manual accompanying this module
will indicate how to install it and the corresponding antenna cables in the device.
Antenna installation is essential in the OA 58XX routers in order to improve the quality of the
signal received and transmitted by the Wireless WAN module (GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA,
HSUPA, etc.).
To obtain optimum performance, the router should always have the WWAN antennas
installed.
There are some cellular telephony technologies that use the antenna diversity mechanism to
improve the quality of the received signal (HSUPA, HSPA+, LTE, CDMA EV-DO, etc.).
Consequently the OA 58XX routers have two WWAN connectors incorporated.
The antenna orientation, its location with respect to other wireless devices and radiation devices,
such as communication devices, personal computers, etc., can significantly influence device
performance.
The antennas transmit and receive radio signals. Performance is also affected by environmental
factors such as the distance between the device and the base station, physical obstacles and other
interferences due to radiofrequencies (RF).
In order to achieve the best coverage, carry out the following instructions:
• Whenever possible, place the antenna where there are no physical obstacles. Obstacles
between the antenna and the base station degrade the wireless signal. Situate the antenna
above ground level and ensure that it is suitably orientated towards the nearest base
station.
• La Density of materials also affects the antennas. Place them away from any type of
wall, metal screens, mirrors, etc.
• Do not place the antenna near columns that can produce shadow areas and reduce the
coverage zone.
• Keep the antenna away from metal pipes such as canals air-conditioning.
• Please bear in mind that other wireless devices such as telephones, microwaves, etc., can
temporarily interfere with the quality of the wireless signal.
• We do not recommend that you install the antennas near or between racks containing
communication devices, computers, etc. Use an extension cable and position the antenna
outside.
• Do not touch or move the antenna while the device is transmitting or receiving.
The OA 58XX router has two connectors to connect the Wireless LAN antennas. These two
antennas are used by the Wireless LAN module. This module is optional and it’s possible that
your device does not have 3G and consequently does not incorporate antennas.
To assemble and dismantle the antennas, simply screw them into the connectors labeled WLAN
located at the rear of the device.
So that the Wireless LAN interfaces are operative, the device must have a plug-in 3G card.
Depending on the model, the antennas are installed in the device at the factory. If your device
does not have the module incorporated, you can obtain this later on. The manual accompanying
this module will indicate how to install it and the corresponding antenna cables in the device.
This device is compatible with 1.8V and 3V SIM cards. Do not install a SIM that does not
support these voltages.
To access the internal SIM you need to open the device. To do this you need to remove the
device’s top panel, which is held on through screws in the rear and side panels of the device.

The OA 58XX router can be updated to new releases. Please consult your distributor for further
details on new releases.
There are various ways to update an OA 58XX router: please see the manual on updating
software “ALU-Dm 748-I Software Updating” for further information.
The software required to update our routers is supplied in a format known as distribution. This
consists of a single file which contains all the files needed to update your device as well as in-
depth information on the contents of the files.
Furthermore, the OA 58XX router may incorporate an independent module for the wireless
WAN interface. Generally the firmware for the modules is independent of the router software.
There is an UPGRADE file for each Wireless WAN module model. Ask your distributor about
the correct UPGRADE file for the module your device has. The Cellular Interface manual (ALU-
Dm 781-I) shows you how to UPGRADE the module.

specifications of this manual without prior notice.
The images presented on the front and back panels of the devices are provided as
information guidelines only. Some small modifications may exist in the actual device.
The AIC VoIP 4 FXS/FXO cards permit the voice exchange between the POTS (Plain Old
Telephone Service) and an IP network.
In a VoIP interface a POTS line can be configured either in FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) or
FXO (Foreign Exchange Office). For further information on VoIP interfaces, please see manual
“ALU-Dm770-I –VoIP Interfaces”.
FXS mode permits direct connection to a conventional telephone, a fax or similar device. This
supplies the power voltage, the rings, detects when the connected device hooks-on or off and
transmits and receives the audio analog signals. In this mode, the interface behaves as if it were
the telephone network.
In FXO mode, the line behaves as if it was a conventional telephone and expects the power
voltage to be supplied to it. This permits the line to be directly connected to the public telephone
network or to a telephone switchboard (PABX).
This card offers four POTS lines that can be configured independently in FXS mode or in FXO
mode.
For further information on VoIP interfaces, please see manual “ALU-Dm770-I VoIP Interfaces”.
The main characteristics of the AIC VoIP 4 lines FXS/FXO card are as follows:

IMPORTANT WARNING:
Do not connect a line configured as FXS to a telephone network or a terminal behaving as FXS.
This could seriously damage the line and/or the board supporting this.
In order to configure the card, you must have access to the OA58XX routers through a console or
a Telnet connection. For further information, please see the section on “Connecting for
configuration” found in “ALU-Dm693-I OA58XX Installation” manual.
So that the AIC cards operate properly, you need to load the appropriate firmware file for each
card in the router.
If the firmware has not been loaded in the device prior to installing the card, you can determine
what firmware file you need.
We have two options to determine the firmware file needed for the installed AIC card:
The FTP command “quote site listfirmwares” returns a list containing the names of the
firmware files needed so the device operates correctly:
The “system firmwares-required” monitoring command displays the same information as the
previous command but in the local console:
+system firmwares-required
Once the necessary firmware file has been detected, you need to load it in the device through an
FTP connection.
For further information on how to load firmware files in the router, please see manual “Dm748-I
Software Updating”.
To install or replace an AIC VoIP 4 FXS/FXO card, please see the AIC cards installation generic
manual corresponding to the OA58XX router model where the installation is being carried out.
A ferrite clamp provided with the card must be installed as shown in Figure 3 to achieve EMI
compliance. It must be placed around the interface cables as shown in the photo, and close to the
card connector. If you need to remove it for any reason, the lock can only be opened with the
black plastic key as shown in Figure 4.
The AIC VoIP 4 FXS/FXO expansion card doesn’t have any LEDs of its own.

AIC VoIP 2 E&M cards permit voice Exchange between an IP network and a switched telephone
network using E&M signaling.
E&M types supported are I, II, III and V. Of these II and V permit unit interconnection on the signaling
side.
In order to send audio, the 4-wire modality is supported, where in each transmission direction a
pair of wires and the 2-wire modality is used, which requires systems that pass from 2 wire to 4
wire, such as hybrid coils and echo cancellation
For further information on VoIP interfaces, please see manual “ALU-Dm770-I VoIP Interfaces”.
The main characteristics of the AIC VoIP E&M 2 accesses card are as follows:

ADSL2+ is a technology that offers transfer rates that are noticeably faster than those provided
by conventional ADSL. So, if through ADSL we have maximum downstream rates of 8/1 Mbps,
with ADSL2+ we achieve 24/2 Mbps. In addition to an improved bandwidth, this standard
contemplates a series of implantations that improve the supervision of the connection and the
quality of services demanded through the line.
For further information on ADSL technology, please see manual “ALU-Dm741 – ADSL-

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. ADSL is a model within the xDSL family
(HDSL, SDSL, etc.). This is a technology which is based on a normal copper pair telephone line,
converts this into a high-speed digital line offering broadband services. ADSL is a modem
technology permitting you to simultaneously transmit voice and data over a conventional copper
line. Three independent channels are established for this:
Two high-speed channels (one for data reception and the other to transmit data).
A third channel for normal voice communications (basic telephone service)
VDSL2 stands for Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line version 2, which is defined in the
ITU G.993.2 standard.
VDSL2 has evolved from the ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ technologies and the main differences are
