PRIMARY LEVEL

NOTE: This sample test frame will not be shown to the candidates.
LOCATION: A quiet place in the school.
DURATION: 5-8 minutes
PARTICIPANTS: 2 students; examiner; usher.
RECORDING: the examination is to be recorded onto an MP3. The recording is sent to Anglia Examinations,
Chichester College, for moderation

The usher/teacher shows the candidates into the examination room.

TASK 1: 1-2 minutes: introductory warm-up

The examiner welcomes the candidates… Hello! My name’s ... and I’ll be your examiner today.
Once the candidates have sat down, the examiner asks… Could I please have your ID card and your
candidate number? or words to that effect.
Both candidates give the examiner their ID cards. The examiner checks the candidates’ identity and that
their names are correctly spelt.
The examiner now asks candidate A four/ five of the questions below:

 What’s your name?


 How old are you?
 Have you got a pet? *
 What is it?
 What colour is your dog/ cat/ bird?
 What size is it? Is it big or small?
 What is your favourite food? Do you like chicken?

*(If the answer is negative, the examiner replaces it with Have you got a brother or a sister? or Have you
got a mother or a father? How old is he/ she/ it?)

The examiner now asks candidate B four/ five of the questions below:

 What’s your name?


 How old are you?
 Have you got a brother or a sister? or have you got a mother or a father?
 What‘s her/ his name?
 How old is she/ he?
 What colour is her/ his hair?
 Is it long or short?

Note: The examiner should not ask the candidate to use full answers at any time, unless (s)he does not
hear the candidate’s answer, in which case the examiner will cup her/ his ears with both hands and say:
Could you repeat that, please?/ Could you say that again, please?
TASK 2: 2 minutes maximum: Vocabulary (odd-one-out)

The examiner shows the students one of the word sets, says all four words aloud and then says which is
the odd-one-out and why: Skirt, coat, jacket, lemon. Lemon is the odd-one-out because it’s a fruit and not
an item of clothing.
The examiner shows several sets of these to the candidates and asks them in turn to read them aloud and
say which is the odd-one-out and why: Read these words now, please. Which is the odd-one-out/different
one? Why? Thank you!

Note: remember this is a speaking test. Getting the right answer is not as important as speaking about it.

Task 3: 3 minutes maximum: Talking about a picture

The examiner has the pictures face down on the table. The candidate picks one.
The examiner points to some objects + actions for each candidate to name, and says some for the student
to find:

Example Picture A:
What’s this? (the examiner points to the cake/boat/baby)
Where is the bottle/stereo/ball?
What colour is this? (pointing to the starfish/ball/T-shirt)
How many boats/people/bikes/birds are there in the picture?
What is he/she doing?
What can you see in the picture?

Example Picture B:
What’s this? (the examiner points to the clock/bike/dog)
Where is the baby/vase/menu?
What colour is this? (pointing to the coat/ice-cream/bag)
How many eggs/apples/people are there in the picture?
What is he/she doing?
What can you see in the picture?

Note: if a candidate does not produce the right answer, the examiner should give it. The examiner
should not emphasise the fact that a candidate fails to produce the right answer. Then the examiner
goes on with the test and asks the next question.

TASK 3a: 2 minutes maximum: Optional extension (where appropriate)

The examiner may ask any or all of the candidates to perform a chant, rhyme, song or poem they know.
Can you sing a song in English? Do you know a poem/chant in English?
That’s the end of the speaking test. Thank you very much! Well done! Bye bye!
