Exercise 05: Structural Analysis of Truss

The document summarizes the structural analysis of a truss using finite element analysis software ANSYS. It details the geometry, materials, boundary conditions and meshing of the truss model. The analysis found the deformation of nodes, stresses in elements, and reactions at fixed supports. Results from the FEA software matched theoretical values satisfactorily, validating the truss analysis.

EXERCISE 05: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF TRUSS

NAME:

CLASS:

ROLL NO:

SUBJECT: FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

EXERCISE 05: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF TRUSS

PROBLEM

Analyse the truss completely i.e. for nodal displacement, reactions and stresses.

Given data:
Area of each member = 200 mm2

E for each member = 200 GPa

P=12kN at node 2

ANSWER:

 ANSYS REPORT

i) TITLE: Truss Analysis using ANSYS Workbench.

ii) AIM: To find out nodal deformation, reactions and stresses.

iii) PRE-PROCESSING:

a) Geometry:

1) Geometry was modelled using ANSYS Workbench Design Modeler.

2) Line bodies were created using point and lines from points option.
3) Cross sections were assigned.
b) Material Data:

Mtrl/ Density Tensile ultimate Tensile Yield Young’s Base

Properties (Kg/m3) strength(Mpa) strength(MPa) Modulus(MPa) Temp (°C)
Structural 7850 250 460 2e+05 22
Steel

c) Boundary Conditions:

Boundary Condition Remark

Fixed Support Node 1 and Node 3 is fixed
Force At Node 2, P=12kN
Environmental condition 22°C

d) Meshing/Discretisation:

Node No/Geometry Setting Name Value (mm)

Node 1 Co-ordinates in x and y (0,0)
Node 2 Co-ordinates in x and y (5000,0)
Node 3 Co-ordinates in x and y (2500,2000)

Meshing Statistics w.r.t. FEA Model Fine Mesh

No. of Elements 3 146
No. of Nodes 3 292
Fine Meshing

iv) POST-PROCESSING:

The problem was solved using standard ANSYS- Workbench Mechanical solver
and following results were obtained:

a) Results:

Total Deformation of the Geometry

Deformation of Node 2 in X-Direction

Deformation of Node 2 in Y-Direction

Direct Stress On Geometry

Force Reaction at Fixed Support (Node 3)

Force Reaction at Fixed Support (Node 1)

Sr No Result Node/Body/Element Values FEA Solution

1 Deformation in X Node 2 -0.1968mm -0.2mm
2 Deformation in Y Node 2 -0.6738mm -0.6833mm
3 Element 1 -88.729N/mm2 -99.92N/mm2
Direct Stresses Element 2 -78.729N/mm2 -80/mm2
4 Reaction force in X Fixed Support 1 15.74kN 16kN
5 Reaction force in X Fixed Support 2 -15.74kN -16kN
6 Reaction force in Y Fixed Support 2 11.91kN 12kN
b) Conclusion:
i) Analysis for given truss element was performed for nodal elongations ,
support reactions and stresses.
ii) Elemental/Nodal values of above said criteria were verified with FEA
solution and found to be satisfactorily within the range.
