FEM Assignment 2 - 2025

The document outlines an assignment for a course on Computer Methods of Structural Analysis, due on March 26, 2025. It includes three questions involving the analysis of a deep beam and shear walls using finite element methods, requiring calculations of stiffness matrices, nodal load vectors, and stresses based on given material properties and dimensions. The assignment emphasizes the need for a convergence study and suggests exploring alternate meshing techniques for computational efficiency.

COMPUTER METHODS OF STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS - 2025

Assignment No. 2

Question 1: A deep beam having a size of 6m (length) x 3.2m (depth) x 0.2m (thick) is simply
supported at the two ends of its bottom surface and subjected to a 100kN vertically downward load
at the middle of its top surface as shown in the figure. Since the usual beam theory based
calculation cannot provide good results due to a significantly small value of the span to depth ratio
of the beam, it is idealised as a plane stress problem and modelled with 3 node triangular elements.

The plane stress problem has a simple rectangular geometry (6mx3.2m), which can be modelled
with a simple finite element meshing consists of few elements (may be 2 or 4 elements as shown in
first two figures) but that will not provide accurate results since this is a continuum problem. Thus,
a convergence study need to be carried out by analysing the structure using different mesh sizes/
divisions to get a converged accurate solution. The finite element meshing show in the last figure is
found to provide a satisfactorily converged solution. For improving computational efficiency,
suggest an alternate meshing (show the meshing along with load and boundary conditions) with
reduced number of elements and nodes maintaining same level of accuracy of the problem. You can
use the benefit of structural symmetry.
Question 2: A shear wall is modelled with triangular elements as shown in the figure. For one of its
elements having 3 corner nodes (shown in red colour), calculate the stiffness matrix. The wall is
250 mm thick with material properties: E = 40 GPa, and G = 16 GPa. You can take any coordinate
system to do the calculation.
Question 3: A shear wall is modelled with six node triangular plane stress elements as shown in the
figure. For one of these elements shown (in red colour), calculate the nodal load vector due to self-
weight taking unit weight (weight per unit volume) of the shear wall material as 25 kN/m3.

Also calculate the stresses at the centroid of the element if the nodal displacements of the element
are: u1 = 12.2 mm, v1 = 10.5 mm, u2 = 15.5 mm, v2 = 10.8 mm, u3 = 16.4 mm, v3 = 12.4 mm, u4 =
14.0 mm, v4 = 10.6 mm, u5 = 16.0 mm, v5 = 11.6 mm, u6 = 14.2 mm, v6 = 11.5 mm, and its material
properties are E = 100GPa and G = 40GPa.

The interpolation/shape functions of the elements are:

N1  2 L1  1L1 , N 2  2 L2  1L2 , N 3  2 L3  1L3 , N 4  4 L1 L2 , N 5  4 L2 L3 , N 6  4 L3 L1

a1  b1 x  c1 y a  b x  c2 y a  b x  c3 y a  a 2  a3
where L1  , L2  2 2 , L3  3 3 ,  1
2 2 2 2

and a1 , a2 , a3 , b1 , b2 , b3 , c1 , c2 , c3 are same as those of the 3 node triangular element
