Writing Portfolio Introduction

Throughout high school, I have always struggled with writing essays the most. When

coming into my senior year, I was genuinely concerned with how well I was going to do in my

dual credit composition class, but not too long after the class began I had already started to

become a better writer. After writing several papers and learning what my strengths and

weaknesses are, I finally began writing quality papers that I was proud of. The three papers that I

have included in my writing portfolio are the three best papers that I have written in high school,

with all three of them coming from Comp II.

The first essay in my portfolio is called “Anti-Vaxxers: A Threat to National Health”

which is an essay about the dangers that parents who don’t vaccinate their children can bring to

society. This essay is my highest grade for a paper ever, mainly because I had finally figured out

how to organize my essays, and because I actually had several quality ideas because of all of the

work and research that I put into my paper. Additionally, I had overcome my time management

issues and turned this paper in on time, avoiding any late deductions.

The next essay in my portfolio is called “I Spy with Millions of Eyes,” and it shows how

today’s surveillance methods are the main cause of privacy issues in America. This was the first

paper that I had ever written in APA format, so it is kind of like a milestone in my writing. I

included this paper because it was one of my favorites to write, plus it is generally informational,

so this essay is a good read.

The last essay featured in my writing portfolio is my research paper, “Today’s Impact on

Tomorrow.” This paper is filled with facts about how the burning of fossil fuels is detrimental to
the Earth, and, because of the immense amount of shocking statistics, it is destined to change the

minds of who reads it, along with how mine was changed while writing it. We were given a very

long amount of time to write this paper, and the whole research process was very organized

because of a past assignment that Mrs. Bazil had us do. Because of those two things, this paper

has the most amount of work put into it, which is why I included it.

These three papers that I have shared in my writing portfolio are the three highest grades

I have received on any paper, all being in the middle to high 90s. It is surprising to me how my

writing has progressed so much in such a short amount of time, but I am definitely glad that it

happened. Admittedly, I received a 54% on the first paper that I wrote in Comp I, and that was

really an eye-opener for me. I had finally found my weakness, and I realized that if I wanted to

survive in this class then I was going to have to put some serious work into it. So, here I am,

almost 8 months later, with A’s in both Comp I and Comp II all because of the effort that I put

forward into becoming a better writing. Additionally, Mrs. Bazil helped me by pointing out the

issues with my papers—which was almost always organization—and pointed me into the right

direction to fix it. All in all, I am ready for any future papers that are thrown my way, and I

believe that every new paper I write will be my “best paper.”
