ECED 205 Early Care Practicum

Self Esteem Checklist

Rationale/Reflection

Standard 4: USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES

Standard 4A

Understanding positive relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation

of their work with young children.

Artifact:

Self Esteem Checklist, Early Care Practicum, ECED 205

Justification:

In Spring 2018, I did my Early Care Practicum in a small class of 10 kids

and developed a self esteem checklist with all the children in the classroom. With
this worksheet I had to consider each of the child’s self-esteem in each of the 12
categories presented. Some of the categories were to see if the child was unafraid
of a new situation, independent needs minimal help, comfortable with physical
activities, coordinated, makes friends easily, seems to be happy most of the time,
talks freely, does not rely on others for directions, experiments with new materials,
creative, imaginative, has ideas of his own, and participates in classroom group
activities. I had to write down an H for high or a L for low self-esteem. It was very
interesting at looking at how each of the children are with their self-esteems. This
was a great assignment to learn on how each child can react with different
situations and circumstances that they will experience for the first time. I took all
these assessments to mind and understanding what kinds of self-esteems the child
can have whether it is high or low.
During this assignment I learned how not all children are the same. They all
have their own unique personalities and their own way of handling a situation. In
the future I hope to use this same checklist to be able to identify each of everyone
of my future students self esteem. I will have the knowledge to distinguish one
from another, and help them build up their self esteem as much as possible.

ECED 260 Early Childhood Professional

Philosophy

Rationale/Reflection

Standard 4B

Knowing and understanding effective strategies and tools for early education.

Artifact:

Philosophy, ECED 260 Early Childhood Professional

Justification:

In this semester in my Early Childhood Professional class I created my

philosophy paper. My philosophy paper, stated how my goal is to promote the
physical, social, emotional, technology, and cognitive development of each child.
In my philosophy I described my values and beliefs as a first and future educator.
My belief system originates from my experiences, spiritual perspective, and
reading of literature. In my introduction I described my views on teaching in a
general sense. In my philosophy I define that standards should be dearly defined
and that discipline be firm, fair, and consistent. In the future with the help of my
philosophy, I hope that when I am a teacher that the kids will learn from me
that learning can be fun and not a task. That there is so much to learn about,
and that you should never get bored with learning. If they leave my
classroom knowing about that and the curriculum needed to succeed in my
particular grade and subject. Than I accomplished everything that I wanted
to.

ECED 233 Emerging Literacy

Flannel Board/Finger Play Cards

Rationale/Reflection

Standard 4C

Using a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching/learning

approaches.

Artifacts:

Flannel Board/Fingerplay Cards

Justification:
In my ECED 233 I created a flannel board based on the book Three Little
Pigs and finger play cards based on Rhyming Music. I was expected to complete a
flannel board and fingerplay cards for the children between the ages of 3-5. I
learned that flannel boards/flannel cards encourage enjoyment of language, stories
and songs can provide a more intriguing vehicle for sharing a rhyme or short story.
I learned that they can help children who show no interest in books to get some
enjoyment out of storytime. I learned that they aid in the teaching of visual literacy,
learning to look and construct meaning from objects. I learned that children use
personal connections to enable the decoding of visual representations of their
experiences.
I now know how flannel boards/finger play cards are a great way for
children to learn and understanding a child’s needs at each of the developmental
stages. I will be well equipped to provide children with encouragement, support,
and experiences which will foster growth across all developmental domains. I
understand that there are many influences which affect a child’s development. I
also understand that as an early childhood educator that I will have the opportunity
to make a positive impact in the lives of young children.

ECED 230 Early Care Practicum

Practicum Journals

Rationale/Reflection

Standard 4D

Reflecting on own practice to promote positive outcomes for each child.

Artifact:

Practicum Journals

Justification:

In my ECED 230 Early Care Practicum, I created journals that I would

create and send to my instructor. In these journals I imputed my perspective with
the children I was with in the classroom, and my own experiences along the way.
Having the time to experience this with the kids doing observations, and practicing
assessments with the kids in everything that they learn was very interesting. Seeing
the kids learn things for the first time and being able to be part of their experiences
made me feel like I was an actual teacher and part of the staff. Being able to work
with an actual teacher made me see how much of an importance being a teacher
actually is and how much a child really needs one in their lives. Journaling was a
great idea for me, because I will be able to look back at these and see how much I
have grown along the years with working with children.
During creating these journals displays my abilities to observe and document
working with children, childhood professionals, and families. With these journals
also shows my competence of combining what I learned in the classroom to take
on to my future classroom. I learned how to combine knowledge from a variety of
resources and use those resources to help me assist the development of taking the
appropriate approaches for teaching my future students. Through my journals I am
also able to see what I learned from my mentor as well.
