Python Assignment 2.2: Problem 1. Analysis of An Open Channel

This document summarizes the results of 4 problems analyzed by Eric Mulligan in his Python Assignment 2.2. Problem 1 involved analyzing a triangular channel and determined a flow depth of 17 inches for a flow of 10 cfs. Problem 2 compared the strength of steel and iron cantilever beams, finding that iron withstands a greater load before reaching a dangerous deflection. Problem 3 analyzed retaining wall stability and found a safety factor above 1.5 for bases over 3 feet wide. Problem 4 plotted two mathematical functions, finding they do not intersect but come closest together at zero.

Python Assignment 2.2

Problem 1. Analysis of an open channel
Analyze a concrete, triangular channel with an angle of 45 degrees and
a slope of 0.005.
A)

B) The range of depths from about 7 inches to about 27 inches seems to

produce an acceptable velocity based on the plot.
C)

D) Based on the plot, a flow of 10 cfs occurs at a depth of about 17

inches.
Problem 2. Design a cantilever beam
Analyze a 6” x 12” rectangular cantilever beam for two materials, steel
and iron, for loads that range from 3 lb/in. to 8 lb/in.
A)
B) Based on the plot, Iron appears to be stronger, since it reaches the
dangerous deflection of 0.5 with a greater load than Steel.
Problem 3. Design a retaining wall
Analyze the SFOS and OFOS for a retaining wall with potential base
dinensions from 1 to 4 feet, incremented by 0.5 feet.
A)

B) Based on the plot, any base width above 3.0 feet will have a safety
factor above 1.5
Problem 4. Plotting mathematical functions
𝑓1 (𝑥 ) = 5(𝑥 − 10)3 + 𝑥 2
𝑓2 (𝑥 ) = 250𝑥 2 + 25𝑥
A)

B) The two functions do not ever cross each other, but they get the
closest together at zero.
