Hands On Equations Study Guide

This document provides a study guide for hands on equations. It defines key vocabulary terms used in equations and lists the legal moves that can be performed on each side of an equation, such as removing or adding variables, constants, or zero pairs. It emphasizes that any operation done to one side must also be done to the other side to keep the equation balanced. Practice problems are included to allow copying and solving sample equations.

Hands On Equations Study Guide

Vocabulary:
equation expression variable constant

evaluate term zero pair coefficient

Hand On Equations Legal Moves:

• Remove an x from each side of the equation
• Remove a ✶ from each side of the equation
• Remove an equal-valued number cube from each side of the equation
• Add a zero pair (x and ✶) to one side of the equation
• Add an x to each side of the equation
• Add a ✶ to each side of the equation
• Remove a zero pair (x and ✶) from one side of the equation
• Add a zero pair of number cubes to one side of the equation
• Remove a zero pair of number cubes from one side of the equation

Important Things to Remember:

• Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side – be fair!
• Keeping an equation balanced is always required
• x and  ✶ are always opposites; their sum is zero
• When you add a zero pair to something, the value does not change
• ✶ is really -x in disguise
