BALLROOM DANCING

- Sometimes called SOCIAL or POPULAR DANCING is usually performed by couple for


pleasure and satisfaction either in private function or in public dancing hall.
- Dance steps are created from man’s basic movements: walk,run,jumps,hop,skip and leap.
- International contest in ballroom dancing gained favor early in the 20th century.
TECHNIQUES OF LEADING AND FOLLOWING THE DANCE
-alert and move with your partner as one
-a basic position which gives security and support
-consciousness of various musical tempo and style.
-knowledge of the basic steps and simple variation

GENERAL RULES IN LEADING THE DANCE


-hold partner firmly but not tensely
-listen to the music to get the beat before starting step out on the accented beat
-start with a new step with the left foot lead
-start with easy steps before going into various, be sure partner can follow.

TYPES OF BALLROOM DANCES

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
Waltz- From the German Word WALZEN meaning to roll out, turn, or to glide.

Viennese
- kind of waltz is usually performed to music with three beats to the bar
- The word Volta means the turn in Italian
- Viennese waltz is danced at a tempo of 180 beats per minute.
- The first record of a dance to ¾ rhythm is a peasant dance of the Provence area of France. A
piece of folk music called VOLTA.

INTERNATIONAL LATIN
Samba
- Is Brazilian in origin and danced to music of the same name
- Different musical styles are paired with different Samba dances.
Rumba
- Has its roots in the Cuban Son.
- The rumba consists of two quick steps and then a third slower step that takes two beats to
execute.
- Dancers use a box-like pattern to guide their movements.
Salsa
- Originated in Caribbean,
- Couples typically perform this dance together and it centers on a four beat combination of
two quick steps and slow step with a pause or tap.
Jive
- One of the most fascinating of all dances

Cha cha cha


- The newest and the most popular of Latin-American dances.
- The dance originally came from CUBA and its forerunner is the Mamb0, which is fact and more
specialist

Pasodoble
- Actually means “two-step” or “Double Step”
CHARACTERISTICS
-is a theatrical Spanish dance
- MAN characterized as the MATADOR (bullfighter)
- the lady as his cape in the drama of a Spanish bullfight.
- based on Flamenco dancing ( Pasodoble is both arrogant and passionate.
-Paso doble is performed more as a competition dance than as a social dance.
