Introduction:
The concept of Time and Work is an important topic for any aptitude exams.
Questions have been regularly appearing over the past decade in all aptitude
examinations. Students can solve questions from PIPES & CISTERN with ease if
you are perfect with this topic.
Theory:
In the context of placement examinations, we have to understand the
following basic concepts of this topic:
 If A does a work in ‘a’ days, then in one day A does ‘1/a’ units of work.
 It is always treated that the work is divided equally for the given period.
 Individual efficiencies of the workers will be considered only if number
of workers are less than or equal to 3.
 If the workers are more than 3 in number, efficiency will be considered
same for everyone (unless groups are mentioned).

(M1 x D1 x H1)/W1 = (M2 x D2 x H2)/W2

Where M = Number of workers
D= Number of days
H= Number of hours per day
W= Number of working units
 Always assume the total work to be the LCM of given numerical values in
the question.
SOLVED QUESTIONS:
Fundamentals:
 If A can do a piece of work in 10 days and B can do the same work in 12 days, then the
work will be completed in how many days if they work together?
Sol) STEP-1: As we were not given anything about the total work, assume total work,
Total work = LCM (10, 12) = 60 units
STEP-2: Find the efficiency (one day work) of the workers:
A’s one day work =?
A  60 units  10 days  60/10 = 6 units/day
B  60 units  12 days  60/12 = 5 units/day
STEP-3: Proceed further based on the condition provided in the question:
A+B are working together, hence their one day work will be: (6+5) = 11 u/d

Quantitative Aptitude
K.SESHAGIRI RAO (C) Copyright (08-04-2019) All Rights Reserved
Total time taken = (Total work) / efficiency of (A+B)
Total time = 60/11 days
Therefore, time taken to complete work if they both work together = 5 1/5 days.

CONDITIONAL WORK:
 A can finish a work in 18 days and B can do the same work in 15 days. B worked for 10
days and left the job. In how many days, A alone can finish the remaining work?
Sol) STEP-1: As we were not given anything about the total work, assume total work,
Total work = LCM (18, 15) = 90 units
STEP-2: Find the efficiency (one day work) of the workers:
A’s one day work =?
A  90 units  18 days  90/18 = 5 units/day
B  90 units  15 days  90/15 = 6 units/day
STEP-3: Proceed further based on the condition provided in the question:
B worked for 10 days, hence work completed = No. of days X B’s efficiency
Work completed for 10 days = 10 X 6 = 60 units
Remaining work = 90 -60 = 30 units
Therefore, time taken by A to complete the rem. work = 30/5 = 6 days
A alone can finish the remaining work in 6 days.

PATTERN BASED:
 A and B working separately can do a piece of work in 9 and 12 days respectively. If
they work for a day alternately with A beginning, the work would be completed in?
Sol) STEP-1: As we were not given anything about the total work, assume total work,
Total work = LCM (9, 12) = 36 units
STEP-2: Find the efficiency (one day work) of the workers:
A’s one day work =?
A  36 units  9 days  36/9 = 4 units/day
B  36 units  12 days  36/12 = 3 units/day
STEP-3: Since they work on alternate days, they will do 7 units in 2 days. This 2 days
cycle will continue. Now, total number of cycles possible is:
Number of cycles = (Total work) / Efficiency per cycle = 36/7 = 5 cycles
1 cycle 2 days

Quantitative Aptitude
K.SESHAGIRI RAO (C) Copyright (08-04-2019) All Rights Reserved
5 cycles 5*2 =10 days
STEP-4: Now A’s turn, he will complete the work which is not a part of cycle.
Therefore, remaining work =36 -35= 1 unit
A can complete 1 unit in ¼ days
Total time = 10 ¼ days

NEGATIVE WORK:
 A can build a wall in 16 days while B can destroy it in 8 days. A worked for 5 days. Then
B joined with A for the next 2 days. Find in how many days could A build the remaining
wall?
Sol) STEP-1: As we were not given anything about the total work, assume total work,
Total work = LCM (8, 16) = 16 units
STEP-2: Find the efficiency (one day work) of the workers:
A’s one day work =?
A  16 units  16 days  16/16 = +1 unit/day
B  16 units  8 days  16/8 = -2 units/day
STEP-3: Given A worked for 5 days to build the wall  5 days work = 5X1 = +5 units
2 days B joined with A in working = 2(1-2) = -2
Remaining Work of building wall = 16 - (3) = 13
Now, the remaining work will be done by A in = 13/1 = 13 days.

EFFICIENCY BASED:
 A works twice as fast as B. If B can complete a work in 12 days independently, the
number of days in which A and B can together finish the work in?
Sol) STEP-1: Assume B’s one day work = 1 unit/day
Therefore, A’s one day work = 2 unit/day
STEP-2: As B can complete the work alone in 12 days, Total work = 12*1=12 units
STEP-3: Time taken if A and B work together = Total work / A+B efficiency = 12/3=4
Therefore, A and B can complete the work together in 4 days.

MAN DAYS:
 4 men can repair a road in 7 hours. How many men are required to repair the road in
2 hours?
Sol) Using the formula of Man-Days: 4*7 = 2*M2  M2 = 14 men
