CHANGING DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS TO SIMILAR FRACTIONS

Objective: Change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions

Review

Look at the pair of fractions in each box. Write D if they are dissimilar and S if
similar fractions.

1 3 5 3 5 7 2 5 3 5 5 6
1) , 2) , 3) , 4) , 5) , 6) ,
4 4 7 8 8 8 5 10 4 7 9 7

Study and Learn

Look at the fraction bars. Do they have the same length?

4
10

4 3
and are dissimilar fractions. Their denominators are not the same.
10 5

4 3
Let’s make and similar fractions. Look at the second fraction bar.
10 5
3
Broken lines were drawn to show how can be changed to fraction whose
5

1
6 4 6
denominator is 10. By counting the shaded area you will get . and
10 10 10
are now similar fractions. They have the same denominators.

Let’s try another example.

1
2

3
4

1 3
and are dissimilar fractions because they have different
2 4
denominators.

1 3
How can we change and to similar fractions?
2 4

Look at the fraction bar with broken lines. If we count the shaded parts you’ll
2 3 2
have . So and have the same denominators now. They are similar
4 4 4
fractions.

4 3 1 3
Let’s change and , and into similar fractions without using
10 5 2 4
illustrations. Drawing fraction bars will consume a lot of your time. The
process of converting dissimilar fractions into similar fractions without the use
of fraction bars is actually very simple. You’ll find it easier and faster.

4 3
,
10 5

Look at the denominators. 10 is a multiple of 5. The least common multiple

of 10 and 5 is 10.

4
What will you multiply to to retain its denominator? What will you multiply
10
3
to to change its denominator to 10?
5

2
4 1 4 3 2 6
x = x =
10 1 10 5 2 10

4 6
and have the same denominators. They are similar fractions.
10 10

1 3
How about and . The least common multiple of the denominators is 4.
2 4

1 2 2
x =
2 2 4

3 1 3
x =
4 1 4

2 3
and are similar fractions. They have the same denominators which is 4.
4 4

Now, let’s try fractions whose least common multiple is not one of the
denominators.

1 2 List down the multiples of the denominators

STEP 1 , → in order. Find their least common multiple.
3 4

3, 6, 9, 12
4, 8, 12, 16

The least common multiple of 3 and 4 is 12.

1 4 4 1 4
x = → Multiply by since 12 is the 4th multiple
STEP 2 3 4 12 3 4
of 3.

2 3 6 2 3
STEP 3 x = → Multiply by since 12 is the 3rd multiple
4 3 12 4 3
of 4.

1 2 4 6
So , when changed to similar fractions are and .
3 3 12 12

3
Try These

Change the following dissimilar fractions to similar fractions. In the first two
items, study the illustrations.

1)

1 4
3 6

3) , → ,
5 3 15 15

6 2 6 4
4) , → ,
8 4

5) , → ,
7 3 21

4
Wrap Up

 To change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions, first

find their least common denominator.
 The least common denominator (LCD) of dissimilar
fractions is the least common multiple (LCM) of their
denominators.
 Use the LCD to write similar fractions.

On Your Own

Change the following to similar fractions.

2 1
1) ,
3 4

1 5
2) ,
5 15

3 1
3) ,
7 2

4 2
4) ,

Check your answer with the answer key. If you get…

4-5 - Excellent! You may now proceed to the next lesson

3-2 - You need to review the processes you missed

0-1 - You need to repeat the whole process. Ask your teacher or
elder to help you.
