Behavior of various Notched Cutting Tool Materials”. I possess 35 years’ academic experience in
materials/mechanical/manufacturing engineering.
I earned PhD in Materials Technology from Brunel University, London, UK in 1991. I am also a
postgraduate in Manufacturing Engineering. I am the author/co-author of 108 publications; which
include 3 books and 23 ISI-indexed peer-reviewed journal papers in the fields of materials,
manufacturing, and mechanical engineering published by reputed publishers from USA, Canada, UK,
Germany, France, Switzerland, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Singapore. I have also been cited
283 times in Google Scholar. My author h-index is 10. I have also successfully completed 20+
industrial consultancy/R&D projects in the areas of failure analysis and manufacturing. I (as PI) have
attracted seven (7) research grants ranging from MYR 25,500.00 to MYR 142,000.00 (from both
internal and external funding agencies). My research interests include: mechanical behavior of metallic
materials; alloy design and microstructural control for high-temperature applications, advanced material
characterization; heat treatment, deformation and re-crystallization, grain-growth kinetics, and designing

Q-2 Metallurgical Failure Analysis of Equal Tee (Pipe) Joints (during March 2008)
(for JAKS Steel Industries Sdn Bhd, Malaysia)
As Project Leader of the above (RM4800.00) industrial consultancy project, I investigated and
analyzed metallurgical failure in steel equal-T joints through metallographic, mechanical testing
and visual examinations; and submitted the Report to the client within 2 weeks.
Q-3. Evaluation of Technology Due Diligence for Production by Powder Injection Moulding
(for Malaysian Technology Development Corporation Sdn Bhd, Malaysia) (in 2006)
As Independent Evaluator (appointed my Malaysian Technology Development Corporation), I visited
the manufacturing plant of Nahnotech Sdn Bhd, Penang, Malaysia, and conducted the technology due
diligence for the production of metal powder injection molding (MIM) during March 2006.
I analyzed the microstructures for the metallographic samples from the standard and locally
manufactured motor-car’s wheel-rim and disc by measuring grain size values. I critically analyzed the
microstructural features (such grain-boundary precipitates, inclusions, grain-size distribution,
microstructural homogeneity, etc.) for the two samples; and submitted the metallurgical report to the
client.
I analyzed metallurgical failure through metallographic techniques, for brake disc of motor-car. The
analysis established ductile/brittle fracture, and microstructural features. Recommendations for
improving melting practice were made on the basis of microstructural features: A/B/C/D-type graphite
flakes.
27
A metallographic specimen from the engine liner, was prepared and the photomicrographs
were analyzed to improve the microstructure. Some improved chemical composition and
machining techniques were also suggested for better performance of the engine liner.
Q-9. Microstructural Control through Heat Treatment for Wheel/Axle Hub for Toyota Car
(for Transmission Engineering Industries Ltd, Karachi) (1997)
I achieved correct microstructural control (tempered martensite) in forged-hardened tempered 1050
steel for front-wheel hub for Toyota Corolla motor-cars through development and implementation of
correct heat-treatment parameters, first-ever implemented in Pakistan. The research & development
(R & D) involved use of micro-hardness tester, sealed quench furnace, and metallographic
equipment. I advised the correct heat treatment parameters, got it implemented, prepared a
metallographic sample, and interpreted the microstructure. The metallographic sample and the
metallurgical report submitted by me, were sent to Toyota Motor Co., Japan, and were approved.
I ran the software for Human Resources Information system and successfully and
satisfactorily developed Software-User Manuals for the following Modules of the
HR Information systems: (1) Recruitment Management, (2) Training & Development
Management; and (3) Appraisal Management. This software had recently been developed by
using VB (6.0) and SQL in a modern database by the Paperless Technology, Karachi.
Q-13. Failure Analysis and Manufacture of Long-Life Alloy-Steel Nose Ring Segment for
Cement Kiln (1995)
(for Dadabhoy Cement Industries Ltd (DCIL) Nooriabad/Karachi
I analyzed creep failure in nose ring segment (N.R.S) of cement kiln and made appropriate
recommendations. After a careful study, I designed an alloy for the N.R.S for cement-kiln. This
new NRS was made of Cr-Ni alloy steel of proper composition for the high operating temperature
of 1350o C in the cement-kiln. I sought out an appropriate manufacturer and delivered the
manufactured component to DCIL. This consultancy resulted in saving of Rs. 1000000.00 per
annum to the industry.
Q-14 Alloy Design for Wear- and Corrosion-Resistant Coal Mill Hammer (Feb. 2003)
(for Dadabhoy Cement Industries Ltd, Karachi/Nooriabad, Pakistan)
As a team leader, I rectified straightening machine for a rolling mill, and commissioned it so as to
ensure straightening of deformed steel bars without damaging their lugs. Some worn rolls were
replaced by new rolls; the latter were cast in-house. The theory of elastic & plastic deformation
was applied to the machine by adjusting the spaces between the rolls to deform the bars just
beyond the yield point of the steel during the initial passes.
I visited the Investment Casting Plant, Karachi Airport, and submitted a proposal to
Pakistan International Airlines Corp (PIAC) for manufacturing aircraft engines' turbine
29
blades at the PIAC's Investment Casting Plant. This proposal was based on the
directionally solidified (DS) superalloy turbine-blades manufacturing technology.
