I achieved correct microstructural control (tempered martensite) in forged-hardened tempered 1050
steel for front-wheel hub for Toyota Corolla motor-cars through development and implementation of
correct heat-treatment parameters, first-ever implemented in Pakistan. The research & development
(R & D) involved use of micro-hardness tester, sealed quench furnace, and metallographic
equipment. I advised the correct heat treatment parameters, got it implemented, prepared a
metallographic sample, and interpreted the microstructure. The metallographic sample and the
metallurgical report submitted by me, were sent to Toyota Motor Co., Japan, and were approved.

Q-10. Microstructural Control for PM Superalloy Turbine Blades

(for INCO Engineered Products Inc., Birmingham, U.K (1987-1991)

During my doctoral research at `Materials Tech. Department', Brunel University, London,U.K, I

extensively used optical and electron microscopes (JEOL 840 SEM, 100-CX TEM, JEOL 2000-FX
TEM, S-250 SEM), heat-treatment furnaces, and metallographic & computerized equipment; and
achieved good microstructural control in a new P/M IN-792. The superalloy was thus rendered
suitable for application in turbine blades. I extensively used computerized image analyzers and
`VIDS General Measurement System’ software to measure grain size and γ’ particle size in the
superalloy. I also analyzed electron microdiffraction patterns (via Stereographic Net) and use of a tb
MASTER 2 computer-program to determine CSL values of grain-boundaries, and to establish
crystallographic features (grain-boundary engineering). The kinetics of grain growth in the P/M
superalloy was also quantitatively established by using log-log plots.

administration of the steel-fabrication industry. Here, I improved productivity through application
of I.E tools of Time and Motion Study, and evaluation of productivity standards for various
manufacturing operations. I also ensured reduction in material-handling cost improvements in the
plant layout. I also made improvements in the spot welding machine to improve the quality of
28
