60 years ago, in Japan, The death rate of pregnant
woman and baby is high.
Japanese developed maternal and child health

(MCH) handbook. Japanese

JICA launched MCH handbook project
to improve MCH status in Indonesia.

What Is MCH handbook?
• MCH handbook contains information of
pregnancy, delivery, and parenting.
• The handbook has pages for doctors

to fill in on the woman’s condition
before, during, and after the delivery.
• Japanese MCH handbook was

developed in 1942, during World War II.
This is the first MCH handbook.
Japan is the origin of MCH handbook.

From 1989, there was a project
to improve MCH status.

JICA launched MCH handbook project.

1989～1994
Indonesian doctor discovered MCH handbook in Japan.
Indonesia version was developed.
1995～1998
MCH handbook project was tried and evaluated.
Dispatched professional to Central Java province.
1998～2003
MCH handbook project started formally.
Utilization of handbook was promoted.
The project area was enlarged to 9 provinces.
1999～2007
Dispatched Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers
2006～2009
Ensuring MCH Services with the MCH Handbook
Project starts.
Support permanent system of MCH services.
