Early Flood Detection and Warning System Using IOT

This document provides an overview of a project to develop an early flood detection and warning system using IoT. The system will use sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, water levels, flow rates, and distances to detect changes that indicate an impending flood. The data will be sent wirelessly to meteorology experts for analysis and flood predictions. If a flood is predicted, an alarm will be raised. The system has the potential to save lives, property, and recovery costs from frequent flooding in parts of India and other areas affected by floods globally.

 INTRODUCTION
You all must have heard about the golden age of India and do you know which was the
richest empire of this so called ‘Sone Ki Chidiya’ ? It was the ‘Magadha’ which once was
home to one of the most sprawling cities of the ancient world. Today it is known as ‘Bihar’,
one of the poorest states of the country. So what is the reason behind this riches to rags
story? There are many answers but undeniably each answer always consists ‘The sorrow of
Kosi’ descriptive in it. The recurring floods of Kosi , Ghagra and Ganga leave Bihar shredded
year after year never giving it a chance to regain its past glory.

This small narrative of floods is not just confined to Bihar just turn your Television on in
monsoons and you will have a pretty good idea about what I am talking about.

The Assam affected by the mighty Brahmaputra floods, West Bengal by the Damodar
floods, our Uttar Pradesh by the The Ganga and its tributaries , the most recent Kerala
floods and the list continues…

These floods wreck havoc causing a huge damage to life ,livestock and property and leaving
behind a vast array of unhygienic conditions like clogged drains, water logging, untreated
sewage and chemicals ,depleted top soil and diseases like cholera, typhoid, malaria ,influenza
which leads to epidemic leading to further devastation.

Now is there any way to avoid this huge loss of life and property year after year?

Is there any way to save the huge amount of GDP being spent into relief works and
restoration which is like an NPA for the nation?

Is there any way to know beforehand when the nemesis is going to attack and brace
ourselves against it?

The answer is an emphatic ‘YES’ .

Well then no more waiting Unfold the pages to find the answer yourselves.

 PRINCIPLE OF WORKING
IOT based early flood detection system is an intelligent system which keeps close watch
over various natural parameters to predict a flood. As we know that prior to a flood the
environment starts changing dramatically, and the parameters of water in dam and at
various points in the river start changing . Our basic aim to exploit these indicative
parameters beforehand to predict the floods and raise the alarm.

Our system basically keeps an eye on the following four parameters :-

 Humidity and temperature

 Water level
 Flow level
 Distance of flood from living areas

 A DHT11 Digital Temperature Humidity sensor is used to detect changes in humidity and
temperature. As we know that before a flood the temperature drops suddenly and humidity
rises rapidly. This sensor consists of resistive humidity and temperature detection systems.
 The float sensor measures the water level in the dam or river and thereby enabling us to
know the possibility of flood. It is a highly important sensor in the whole process as water
level is directly proportional to a probability of floods.
It basically works on the principle of opening and closing of circuits.

 Initially
Dry condition circuit open no current flows all safe

 At time of flood
Wet condition circuit closed current flows chance of flood

 The water flow sensor in the system keeps eye on the rate of flow of water . Its speed
changes with different rate of flow. The water flow sensor consists of a water rotor and hall
effect sensor . When the water flows through the rotor the rotor rotates at varying speeds
the sensor analyses these speed and transfers the data over the wifi module. The speed of
rotation is dependent on rate of flow of water and thus we can determine the rate of flow of
water from this data.
 We also have the ultrasonic sensor which works on the principle of SONAR(Sound Navigation
and Ranging). The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic sensor uses ultrasonic waves to determine the
distance of an object and it works on principle of reflection and reception of ultrasonic
waves.

These all parameters are recorded continuously over a fixed time period and are sent to the analysis
wing of meterology department over a wifi module where experts check the fluctuations in the
parameters , analyse them and finally predict the possibility of flood and raise the alarm .

APPLICATIONS AND SCOPE

 The flood detection technology we are using here has been successfully implemented in
many parts of the world. One of the most prominent examples is in Buneos Aires, Argentina
where a similar system was installed by Libelian Sensor Technologies .

 This technology is not only limited to flood detection, infact with addition of few more
components and some technical modification in its physical and internal structure this
system can be expanded to the early detection and warning against
thunderstorms, cyclones, hurricanes and tsunamis. Thus it can help in saving the life of
millions of innocent people who fall a prey to these natural calamities. It will also lead to
saving of billions of dollars of money spent every year in fighting against these calamities.

 Finally we would like to conclude that today when nations are spending billions of dollars in
developing destructive weapons which are a man made calamity ,at such a time we have a
will, we have an inexpensive and efficient idea to save people against the natural calamities.

BE WISE , SAVE LIFE
