Homiletics 101 Syllabus

Purpose:
The Basics of Preaching and Teaching is a one-credit course designed to give the student a complete
perspective on the task of expository preaching and Bible teaching. The student will be introduced
to the basics of preparation, organization and delivery. Moreover, the student will be instructed on
how to maintain the redemptive aims of Scripture while explaining and exposing the meanings of
Biblical texts.

Grading Scale
All Covenant Institute courses operate on a ten-point scale.
The Grade for Homiletics 101 will be based on the following:
Attendance: 10%
Weekly quizzes: 20%
Project: 30% (Due Oct 25th)
Final Exam: 40% (Oct 25th)
Class Auditing
Those desirous to attend and are not working toward the certificate in religious studies need not take
the quizzes, tests or complete the project.
Certificate in Religious Studies
Those desirous of earning the certificate in religious studies must take the final exam and complete
the project in order to receive credit for the course.
A 2.00 GPA must be earned in order for the course to count toward the certificate.
Transcripts and Other Records
All transcripts and attendance records will be kept and maintained by Covenant Institute

Project Description
Each student desirous of earning credit for Homiletics 101 must complete the class project no later
than Oct 25th. Extension will be given rarely.
The project is a five-paragraph essay communicating the main point of a portion of Scriptural text.
The essay must include an introduction, conclusion and three main points.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be short and at the beginning of every class. No make up quizzes will be given. The
material for the quizzes will be found exclusively in the notes taken during class.
Tests
There will be one final test on the last day of class. The material for the test will be exclusively from
the notes.
