History
The Sahiwal District has been settled from the
pre-historical era. Sahiwal is located close to
Pakpattan. Pakpattan owes its sanctity and modern
name, 'the holy ferry', to the shrine of the great
Muslim Sufi Fariduddin Ganjshakar Shaikh-ul-Islam,
Farid-ul-Hakkwa-ud-Din, Shakar Ganj (1173–1265)
which was visited by old great travel and historian
Ibn Batuta in 1334. The native population converted
to Islam by Sufi missionaries. After the decline of the
Mughal Empire, the Sikh took control of Sahiwal.
The district came under direct British rule in 1849,
when the district was officially formed with its
headquarters at Pakpattan. The district was
expanded to include the trans-Ravi portion in 1852,
and the district headquarters were moved to Gogera.
In 1865, when the railway was opened, a village
name as ''Sahiwal'' on the railway side, was named
"Montgomery" on the name of Robert Montgomery
and became the capital of the district.
Harrapa
Harappa is an archaeological site, about 35 km
west of Sahiwal, that was built approximately 2600
BCE.Archaeologists think that in ancient times
Harappa was the urban centre in the upper Indus
region, much like Mohenjo-daro dominated the
lower Indus Valley and Ganweriwala might have
been the urban centre for what is now Rajasthan.
The site at Harappa was first excavated by Sir
Alexander
Cunningham in 1872-73, two decades after Brick
Robbers carried off the visible remains of the city.
He found an Indus Seal of an unknown
origin. The Harappan Civilization has its earliest
roots in cultures such as that of Mehrgarh,
approximately 6000 BC. The two greatest cities,
Mohenjo-daro andHarappa, emerged circa 2600 BC
along the Indus River valley in Punjab and Sindh.
