The paper bridge SIP aims to construct a strong paper bridge using the channel-folded method that can support multiple coin "vehicles" and demonstrate the force of tension. The magnetic slime SIP shows how immunotherapy works by creating a slime that responds to magnets. The natural air freshener SIP creates a non-toxic spray using essential oils and extracts that provides a natural smell without damaging the ozone layer.

Title: Paper Bridge

Purpose of SIP:
To construct a paper bridge that is strong enough to support several "vehicles" while demonstrating the
force of tension.

Procedure:
1. Step 1: Place the blocks on a solid surface, such as a floor or table. Place them about 6 inches
apart.
2. Step 2: Create a paper bridge using one of the sheets of paper.

[ For Step #2 we use the Channel-Folded Method ]

An index card is folded into a channel and placed across two markers. This time, stacks of pennies
are added one by one until the bridge breaks or until you run out of pennies. While only 45 pennies
can be seen below, the bridge can handle much, much more than that.

3. Step 3: With your bridge folded, place it on the wooden blocks so that it spans the length of the
bridge evenly.
4. Step 4 : One by one, place your coin "vehicles" in the center of the bridge on your "roadway".
Do not place the coins on the wooden blocks.

Materials:
 Two even sized wooden blocks
 Several standard sheets of writing paper
 Several coins

Title: Magnetic Slime
Purpose of SIP:
This simple model shows the basic operation of immunotherapy. This includes treatments that work in
different ways. Some boost the body’s immune system in a general way.

Procedure:
1. Empty the entire bottle of white school glue into the large mixing bowl.
2. Fill the empty bottle nearly full with water, cap it, and shake it up to recover all the glue.
3. Pour the water and glue solution into the bowl
4. Add a generous amount of iron filings to the water and glue mixture. Stir the new mixture
thoroughly with a spoon.
5. Measure a 1/2 cup (118 ml) of warm water and pour it into the plastic cup.
6. Add 1 teaspoon of borax powder to the water in the cup and stir the solution. Be sure the borax
dissolves completely.
7. Add the borax solution to the glue solution in the bowl.
8. Mix the glue and borax solutions together completely. It’s a totally safe combination so use your
fingers but be sure to wash your hands with soap first.
9. Bring the magnet close to the surface of the flattened slime and watch the slime spring upward
and grab it. The slime is stretchy but it doesn’t want to move easily out of place. Use the magnet
to build miniature volcanoes in the slime.

Materials:
 Elmer’s Glue
 Measuring Cup
 Iron Fillings
 Borax powder
 Water

with an alcohol ]
3. Swirl the bottle about 10 times to combine oils with witch hazel.
4. Top off with water, leaving a little room at the top for shaking.
5. Shake well, and spray into the air.

Title: Hot Pepper Spray
Purpose of SIP:
Repels many garden insects and wildlife pests. It is probably the most inexpensive option to make at
home and isn’t harmful to you while applying it.

Procedure:
1. Put garlic, peppers, oil, soap, and water in a blender and blend on high for several
minutes.
2. Leave in a bowl or pitcher overnight or for at least 12 hours to intensify the effects of
the garlic and peppers.
3. Strain through towel, cheesecloth, or strainer and store in a glass jar.
4. To use, pour about 2 TBSP in a 16 ounce spray bottle (or 3 TBSP in a 24 ounce) and
shake well.
5. Spray directly on plants as needed… I recommend wearing gloves!
6. Use as often as needed for preventative and pest-controlling effects.

Materials:
 2-4 cloves of garlic
 At least 4 hot cayenne (or hotter) peppers
 2 TBSP olive oil or other liquid oil
 1 TBSP liquid castile soap like Dr. Bronners
 2-3 cups hot water
 blender (I use my Vitamix)
 towel, strainer, or cheesecloth

Expected Results:

 Tristan Cruz
 Kristen Aguilar
