EXPERIMENT NO. 1:
TRAFFIC VOLUME COUNT AT INTERSECTION
INTRODUCTION:
When determining the volume of traffic at an intersection, the students are
required to note down the movements of the vehicles and classify the vehicles
into five categories as follows:
(a) Cars, taxis and light goods vehicles
(b) Heavy goods vehicles and small buses
(c) Very heavy goods vehicles and big buses
(d) Motorcycles
(e) Bicycles
APPARATUS
Manual counters
PROCEDURE
(a) An intersection is selected.
(b) The layout of the intersection is sketched.
(c) The types of vehicles and the movements of the vehicles are recorded
for one hour, where each person is assigned to 1 direction.
RESULTS / CALCULATIONS
(a) Present your results neatly in a table.
REPORTING OF RESULTS
Draw a flow diagram for the intersection.
Weather: Rainy
Right 84 32 0 4 0 134
Left 56 0 0 80 0 96
Answer:
Volume study is conducted to determine the number, movements, and
classifications of vehicles at a given location. This data assists in identifying
critical flow time periods and determining the influence of vehicles and
pedestrians on vehicular traffic flow.
Other purposes of volume study include:
● Establishing relative importance of a particular road
● Road structural design
● Planning and design of new roads
● Designing of intersections and other control devices
● Planning, design and management of traffic
● Establish characteristics and schedules for traffic improvements
