The environmental art movement emerged in the 1960s and early 1970s and primarily
celebrates the artist’s connection with nature. Pioneers of the movement such as Nils-Udo
became famous for creating site-specific sculptures and installations from founded natural
materials, then documenting his works with photography. While earlier artists such as Udo
celebrate the beauty of nature, many of today’s artists are using a wide range of media,
techniques and styles to address social issues and the negative impact we as human beings are
having on our planet. The picture above wanted to tell us about excess plastic, water pollution
and the destruction of aquatic life. It has been found that more than 60 countries around the
world have issued plastic prohibitions or taxes on plastics. It is too early to evaluate whether
these policies are effective, 50% of which lack data, 30% of countries have reduced plastic bag
consumption, and 20% have no change.Since 1990, the global production of plastic products has
grown by an average of 4,5 percent per year. Compared with 25 years ago, the global
consumption of plastic products has increased by more than three times, and more than 200 times
more than in the 1950s.Therefore, the International Energy Agency believes that if no effective
measures are taken, global plastics production will continue to grow by 70% by 2050.
Excess plastic define as the amount of plastic usage that is more than necessary. In the
picture shown above, we can easily found that tons of plastic products such as plastic bags and
bottles along the seashore. Plastic are currently one of the most commonly used disposable
products in the world. From the global geographical distribution, China, Japan and South Korea
have the largest plastic production, accounting for 26%, the second is North America, accounting
for 21%, the third is the Middle East, accounting for 17%, and the European Union is followed
by 16%, Asia Pacific. 12%. The above regions add up to almost 50%, and plastics are basically
produced in these places. In 2014, global plastic production exceeded 400 million tons, of which
the packaging industry used the largest amount, accounting for 6%, the construction industry
accounted for 16%, the textile industry was the third, accounting for 14%, consumer products
accounted for 10%, and 7% were transportation. Therefore, hundreds of millions of people use
plastic products every day and throw them away once after used.
When waste is produced and simply dumb into the rivers or oceans, harmful chemical
or substances enter clean water and pollution of water occurs. The biggest effect of water
pollution is that pollutants will spread rapidly in water. A small volume of concentrated
pollutants will cause a large area of water to be completely polluted in an instant, and the water
source that people and other organisms depending as their needs for daily life will immediately
lose their utilization value. The sea water in the picture shows that definitely being substituted by
pollutants which means that the important source, water had been polluted seriously. According
to the United Nations Water Resources World Assessment Report, millions of tons of garbage
are dumped into rivers, lakes and creeks every day in the world. Each liter of wastewater pollutes
8 liter of fresh water; all rivers flowing through Asian cities are polluted; 40% of the United
States The watershed is contaminated with processed food waste, metals, fertilizers and
pesticides; only five of the 55 rivers in Europe are barely viable. Water pollution poses a great
threat to human health. About 1 billion people in developing countries drink unclean water.
About 25 million people die each year from drinking unclean water. An average of 5,000
children die every day from drinking unclean water, and 300 million urban residents face water
pollution.
In conclusion, this image is trying to reveal the mother earth is under a bad
circumstances and everyone should be concerned and treasure our mother earth. The earth is the
homeland where we lived and provide tremendous of sources for us. Therefore, every of our
mankind have the obligation in order to enhance our mother earth towards a more fascinating
and clean environment as this is our responsibilities. Meanwhile, the next generation will be able
to live in a comfortable environment instead of filthy environment which will also lead to variety
of diseases appear and causing the climate change which lead to natural disaster and affect
harmfully towards the new generation.
