I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. Define sets
b. Describe, represent, and illustrate sets
c. Define elements of a set
d. Read and define the symbol ∈ and ∉
e. Describe and illustrate Equal sets
A. Review
B. Motivation
Below are some objects. Group them as you see fit and label each group.

C. Discussion
The groups are called sets for as long as the objects in the group share a characteristic and are
thus, well defined. The term well-defined object means that given an object and a set, you can
tell whether or not the object is in the set.
Example:
Is a chess set a mathematical set? Why or why not?
Answer:
No, the chess set is not a mathematical set since there are pieces that are not distinguishable from
each other. For example, there are two identical black bishops, two identical white knights, eight
identical black pawns and so on.
Example: The set of all grade 7 students in a school is an example of a mathematical set. Even if
there are identical twins among the students, you should be able to distinguish one twin from the
other by their names or student identification (ID) numbers.

Elements of a Set
The objects belonging to a set are called elements. One way to represent a set is by listing down
all its elements between the symbols { } (called braces).
Example:
{dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup}
Note: To avoid having to rewrite all the elements of a set, capital letters are used to name the
set.
For example, you may use A to name the four-piece dinner set described above.
Example:
For example if
A= {dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup}
then
bowl ∈ A but spoon ∉ A
Equal Sets
Let A and B be sets. You say A is equal to B, written as A = B, if ever element of A is in B and
every element of B is in A. If A is not equal to B, you write A ≠ B. For example, if P and Q are
the sets
P = {red, blue, white, yellow},
Q = {blue, red, yellow, white},
Then P = Q.
IV. Assessment
Let S denote the set of Prime numbers less than 19
1. List the elements of S
2. Fill in the blank with the correct symbol: ∈ or ∉
a) 1___ S
b) 2___ S
c) 7___ S
d) 9___ S
e) 13___ S
f) 19___ S
Answer:
Recall that a number is prime if it is greater than 1 and it has no factors other than 1 and itself.
Note that the smallest prime number is 2.
1. S = {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17}
2. a. ∉
b. ∈
c. ∈
d. ∉
e. ∈
f. ∉
For items 1 to 2, let A denote the set A = {1, 4, 9, 16, 25}
1. Which of the following is an element of set A?
a. 0 b. 1 c. 2 d. 3
2. Which of the following is equal to set A?
a. {1, 4 16}
b. {9, 25, 16, 4}
c. {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
d. {1, 4, 9, 16, 25}
V. Assignment
A. Answer each question.
1. What symbol is used to denote “is an element of”?
2. When are two sets equal?
