1.0 Introduction

Vices are those acts and conditions that violate societal norms and values.

Vices can refer to a fault, a negative character trait, a defect, an infirmity, or a

merely a bad habit. Vices are habits and activities that are not beneficial to an

individual. It usually produces negative consequences in the physical, emotional,

mental and social aspects of a person. The generation today is facing a great

ideal of vices like drug addiction, smoking, computer games, social networking,

gambling, pre-marital sex, pornography and drinking which has become more

accessible to public.

It would suggest that vices are common among these people because of

the age proper and the independence from parents. Vices may inhibit the

productivity and further effectiveness of a student, since they take time,

concentration and financial resources. The Vices that the researchers want to

tackle are alcoholism and smoking because these vices are the most common

and prevalent among students.

Time, commodities, health and education are affected by these vices, thus

it gives us an interest in finding out whether these activities can affect on

motivation and performance in school. Academic success and perseverance in

attaining high grades is crucial in students because it will be beneficial for the

years to come. It would be a favorable result if the student will continue to pursue

excellence to such. However, this research would like to find out whether the

outcome would decrease or increase the students conduct in their study.

BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

According to Fadipe and Oluchukwu (1999), qualitative aspect of

education should be viewed as a living and moving thing whose goodness

resides not only in its excellence relative to certain standards but in its excellence

and fitness to the changing needs of the particular students and the society it is

intended to serve. Qualitative education should therefore lead to detectable gains

in knowledge, skills and values. There are, however, several students’ vices that

seem to be militating against realization of the desired qualitative education in

Philippine institutions. Some of the common vices include cultism, drug abuse,

examination malpractice, obscene dressing, and sexual promiscuity/harassment.

The vices of students in Bauan National Agricultural and Vocational High

School are smoking, drinking alcohol, mobile games and social networking.

Smoking, this is a physical addiction to tobacco products especially the

cigarettes. The alcohol, which can affect your ability to control your behavior and

your bodily functions, like thinking, talking, walking and even breathing.

Given these points, the study aims to determine the impact of vices on the

academic performance of selected Grade 10 students in Bauan National

Agricultural and Vocational High School. Also, the study intents to determine the

vices of the selected grade 10 students and why do they commit such. This study

also wants to propose an action plan to help the respondents in avoiding their

vices.

The result of this study may benefit the students, parents, teachers,

present and future researchers.

First, it may benefit students by allowing them to understand better the

vices that can affect their academic performance. They may be able to improve

their academic performance with the findings that are established by this study.

With this study’s insights, the parents may be able to understand and help their

children regarding their school matters and give them support. For the teachers,

this study may help them to recognize problems encountered by the students

that may pose an effect in their performance. They may find alternative actions

on how to handle their students. For the present researchers, they may be able

to promote thinking skills assessment in their school, letting their teachers

understand the influences of their student’s preferred learning styles that will

promote adequate learning opportunities and effective instructions. And lastly for

the future researchers, they can enhance the knowledge of people which is

involved in taking those vices.

2.0 Methodology

The design used for this study was the qualitative research design. The

research design was done in order to identify all relevant primary research,

makes a standardized appraisal of study quality and the studies of acceptable

quality are systematically synthesized

BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

Specifically, the qualitative research design used by the researchers was

the case study method since the main purpose of the study is to enhance a

productive study by determining the impact of vices on the academic

performance of selected grade 10 students in Bauan National Agricultural and

Vocational High School. Using some techniques like accessing on the internet for

related valuable information on the subject and through means of observation

and interview. From the gathered necessary data, recommendations can be

derived for an action plan to help respondents in avoiding their vices.

This method of providing information for respondents has been used in

other studies to introduce potentially unfamiliar subtopics about vices. After

providing some information, the researchers were asked a series of questions

about the vices. These interview questions were based on themes found in the

literature on the study of impact of vices on academic performance. For the basis

of the study, initial information were collected from books, journals, magazines,

unpublished theses and internet. The related literature and studies were derived

from the process of collecting significant study.

On the other hand, there are a variety of methods of data collection that

could support the study, including observations, textual or visual analysis (e.g.

from books or videos) and interviews (individual or group). However, the most

common methods used, particularly in case study research, are interviews and

focus groups.
BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

Three variables were measured to answer our questionnaire. These were

the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes Grade 10 high school students

towards those vices. Knowledge was measured through the students’ awareness

on vices laws, dangers, ads and promotions, and cessation. Perception was

measured by the view of the student on the possibilities of some situations that

might happen to him because of smoking; these views of the possibilities could

be high or low which in turn could reflect if they had positive, negative or neutral

perceptions about smoking. Attitude was measured by the students’ position

about smoking; positive, negative or neutral. Positive attitude implied that the

student favored vices while negative was being against it.

Otherwise, the questionnaire was divided into three parts: The first part is

to identify the student’s vices. For the second part tackles the questions about

the reasons why do they commit those vices. And for the last part, the researcher

asked about the situation of their academic performance.

3.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This section shows the discussions and results of the data collected that would give

the readers a better hold and understanding about the Impacts of Vices on the

Academic Performance of Selected Grade 10 Students in Bauan National

Agricultural and Vocational High School.

3.1 What are your vices?

Vices are already correlated by age 14, are socio-economically patterned,

and move together during adolescence. Future studies and interventions should be

targeted at a younger age range, to identify early smoking and potentially hazardous

alcohol drinking patterns. In relation to the study, our respondents narrate their vices

as shown by the lines below;

“pag-iinom at paninigarilyo, yun lang!”

Smoking and drinking share many detrimental effects, some of which operate

synergistically. Over 90% of alcoholic inpatients are smokers, with similar findings

regarding outpatients. In the general population, the relationship between smoking and

drinking appears positive but modest. Nicotine appears to facilitate ethanol consumption

and vice versa. While ample theoretical viewpoints exist to explain the covariance of

alcohol and cigarette consumption, conclusive data supporting one or another of these

views are lacking. The assumption that alcoholics should be discouraged from quitting

smoking as well as drinking is without empirical basis. Research should ascertain

whether problem drinkers with greater positive association between alcohol and smoking

benefit differentially from quitting both.

BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes are too harmful in lives of every people who

have vices. Sometimes it is okay to commit those vices to ease some problem or stress

in his daily life, but if he do that every day then he may have some diseases from the

effects those vices.

3.2 Why do you commit those vices?

Vices among students include drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and use of drugs.

Students often drink alcohol because they want to have fun, in Philippines, they call it

"walwal". When they wants to celebrate something, they drink. When they're happy,

they drink. Whatever they are feeling, they drink. In relation to the study, our

respondents explain the reasons why they commit those vices as shown by the lines

below;

“Ginagawa namin itong libangan tsaka nakakawala ng stress” respondent 1

“Wala lang” respondent 2

“Wala lang, pag may problema at pag kakain” respondent 3

Peer pressure is the major cause of youth involvement in vices. Students spend

more time with their friends at school or at home. Due to their weak nature and tender

age, they can easily be influenced. Teenagers have a high level of curiosity to learn, to

have fun and practice new things thus making them to smoke, drink and commit another

vices. A proverb that says “show me your friends, and I will tell who you are” shows the

significance of friends and how they influence lives. Lack of parental care, supervision

and attention can also make a child engage in different kinds of vices.
BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

Close monitoring and time should be given to children by parents. Children should be

taught the moral values, this might help as a solution. Another solution is to organize

forums that will enlighten the students about the dangers associated with social vices.

3.3 How do these vices affect your academic performance?

It seems to be a “coming of age thing” when a student encounters vices such as

drinking and smoking. Students divert their time to those vices instead of being

serious with academic works. There is wastage of time which leads to poor academic

performance. In relation to the study, our respondents narrate how those vices affect

their academic performance as shown by the lines below;

“Hindi nakakapasok ng maaga, tapos hangover pa tsaka liliban para mag-inom

at manigarilyo” Respondent 1

“Yung liliban lang para mag-inom bago manigarilyo” Respondent 2

“Nakakawalang gana mag-aral” Respondent 3

It is well established that poor academic performance is related to smoking and

drinking alcohol, but the association between academic well-being and smoking less

known. Low schoolwork engagement and high school burnout increase the odds for

daily smoking and drinking in all countries. Academic performance was correlated with

school burnout and school engagement, and adjusting for it slightly decreases the odds

for smoking. Adjusting for socioeconomic factors and school burnout and low schoolwork

engagement correlate with low academic performance, they are mutually independent

risk factors. Despite well-known risks, people continue to abuse those vices
BNAVHS- SENIOR HIGH

3.3.a. How frequent do you commit those vices?

“Halos araw-araw” respondent 1

“Isang beses sa isang buwan lang naman” respondent 2

“Minsan lang hahaha…. Pag napaulot lang hahha” respondent 3
