Urban Sewage Treatment
So, what does the wastewater treatment plant in your neighbourhood look
like? Is it very different from the one in the video?

3. BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT
Learning Objectives
Welcome to module 3 of this course, in which you will be guided through biological
treatment. By the end of this module you will be able to:
Understand the biological treatment process and how this is connected with the
cycles in nature
Calculate with biological processes
Work and design with trickling filters
One of the cycles in nature that you will learn about this week is the carbon cycle. The
video below will show you which role you play in the carbon cycle (if you only have
limited time, watch the video from 3:15 minutes onward). In the next section there are
some questions for the debate. Think about them while you are watching the video.

Questions for debate
Which organic compounds, in addition to excrement, do you flush through the
sewer? Does this influence the carbon cycle positively or should you throw it away in
your garbage? Why do you think so?
Please share your comments, contributions, and discussion with your colleagues on
the forum If there is already a post, please reply and debate on that post. We are looking
forward to nice discussions!
Reading
Read part 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 (page 41 - 42) of the module Biological / Secondary
treatment.
Read part 3.1 (page 34 - 40) of the module Biological / Secondary treatment.
4. ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS
Learning Objectives
Welcome to module 4 of this course! This module we will introduce you to "the
activated sludge process". By the end you will be able to:
Draw and make calculations of process units
Describe different activated sludge systems
Calculate sludge return flows and dimension secondary clarification
Before you start with the learning material we have first some questions for debate in
the next section.
Enjoy!
Questions for debate
What kind of wastewater treatment facilities do you have in your neighborhood; a
natural non-mechanized system or a designed system, such as trickling filters or
activated sludge?
What effluent quality is required, so what type of system is needed to fulfill these
requirements?
Please share your comments, contributions, and discussion with your colleagues on the
forum. As soon as you find in the forum a person who has the same wastewater
treatment facilities as you do, compare and discuss what are the differences in your
context. We are looking forward to nice discussions!
Reading
Read part 3.2.3, 3.2.4 and 3.2.8 (page 42 - 44 and 50 - 52) of the module Biological /
Secondary treatment.
Read part 3.2.5 (page 44 - 45) of the module Biological / Secondary treatment.
Read part 3.2.9 (page 53 - 54) of the module Biological / Secondary treatment.

5. NITROGEN AND PHOSPHOURUS REMOVAL
Learning Objectives
Welcome to the fifth module of this course, in which you will learn about nitrogen and
phosphorus removal. This module you will learn to:
Recognize which organism is responsible for which biological process in
activated sludge systems
Estimate tank sizes and recycle flows for nitrogen and phosphorus removal
In module three you already learned about the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. One
cycle was not yet discussed in the third module: the phosphorus cycle. We would like
you to discuss with each other about the questions in the next section. To get inspired,
please watch the following two movies about the phosphorus problem and a
phosphorus-recycling system in Nepal.

Questions for debate
Why do we need to take the phosphorus from the sewage?
Is there a way to close the phosphorus loop via sewage treatment?
Please share your comments, contributions, and discussion with your colleagues on
the forum. If there is already a post, please reply and debate on that post. We are looking
forward to nice discussions!

6. DIGESTION OF SLUDGE AND SEWAGE
Learning Objectives
Welcome to the sixth and last module of this course, in which you will learn about
sludge treatment. By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Understand the composition of sludge
Explain the treatment processes for sludge
Quantify impact sludge dewatering on total sludge discharge
The last step in the sewage treatment plant is the sludge treatment. We would like you
to discuss with each other about the questions in the next section. To get inspired,
please watch the following movie that is made by the Dutch water authorities on sewer-
mining.

Questions for debate
Answer the following questions regarding your city and compare this with the your
fellow students.
What happens to the sludge in your city?
What kind of benefits can we get from the sludge?
Please share your comments, contributions, and discussion with your colleagues on
the forum. As soon as you find a person who has the same answers as you do, compare
and discuss what the differences are in your context. Have fun!
