Introduction and Statement of The Problem

This chapter discusses the background and context for a research study on the effects of alcohol consumption on senior high school students' academic performance. It notes that 60% of Filipino youth drink alcohol and many students consume it as a stress reliever or coping mechanism. The research aims to provide unknown facts about how drinking impacts students' schoolwork. It reviews literature showing links between alcohol, tobacco use, and negative emotions. The statement of the problem outlines questions about why students drink, how it affects their academics, how some manage school while consuming alcohol, what influences them to start, and their risk of dependency.

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The introduction, statement of the problem, hypothesis, scope and

delimitation, research paradigm, significance of the study and the definition of terms used

are discussed in this chapter. All of this will be used to further explain the topic of the

research.

INTRODUCTION

Numerous senior high school students have already experienced drinking

alcoholic drinks like beer, wine, brandy, whiskey, etc., most of the students that are

exposed by drinking alcohol are minors, in a survey conducted by the University of the

Philippines, 60 percent of Filipino youths today are drinking alcoholic beverages. Based

on the observations of the researchers, they have found out that plenty of the adolescent

students consume alcohol as a stress reliever, motivation, to cope with a certain event or

happenings, and other different reasons. This has been common now, especially to the

senior high school students. This research’s goal is to inform students about how alcohol

consumption affects students’ academic performance. This research will seek to provide

unknown facts about the impacts of alcohol consumption of senior high school students

on their academic performance. Mild drinking habits of students are becoming a

substance abuse (abuse of tobacco, drugs, etc.).

Alcohol is an addictive drink that is made from yeast and sugar, there are also individual

sources of sugar that can process different types of alcohol. Alcohol can be perceived as

a psychoactive drug, a drug that affects the mental processes and mind (Lautieri, 2019).

Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol have a large connection with each other

(Batel et al., 1995; Burton and Tiffany, 1997). Students that smoke tobacco has a high

opportunity of drinking alcohol as both of these substances are addictive. Countless

people have an idea about the harmful effects of alcohol and tobacco in the body, whether

non-smokers, non-alcoholics, and even smokers and alcoholics perceived their effect as

harmful (Hermand et al., 1995, 1997, 2000). Drinking alcohol has been a common

solution for some students whenever they experience negative emotions (i.e. sadness,

anxiety, and hopelessness).

Based on Hellmich (2013), 24.7% of boys and 15% of girls engage at different

kinds of binge drinking. Binge drinking is defined as a practice of intaking a large quantity

of alcohol in a single session of in a particular period, specifically drinking five or more

drinks at a time for men and four for women. This firmly discussed the statistics of how

people are open about excessive consumption of alcohol.

experiences. Student’s characteristics are the elements that provides their basis on how

they are going to perform academically.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The amount of senior high school students that are drinking alcohol is constantly

increasing, most people have a piece of knowledge about its physical, mental,

emotional, and spiritual effects but there is still undisclosed information that many

people don’t know.

Particularly, those can be answered by the help of these following questions:

´ What are the reasons why senior high school students drink alcohol?

´ What are the effects of alcohol on student's academic performance?

´ How do some students that consume alcohol manage to cope with school activities?

´ What influenced them to start drinking alcohol?

´ Do the gathered sample have a risk of having an alcohol dependency?
