Pre Colonial
Pre Colonial
It is a well-known fact that Science and Technology has played a crucial part in the socio-
economic development and industrialization of a country. The development of a country
depends on the usage of Science and Technology to process raw materials into advanced
products that could sustain the fundamental needs of a nation. Our society changed drastically
from rural living, letters, horseback rides, into urbanized cities, cellphones, and fast cars. How
did we end up to the innovations of today?
Even before the Spaniards colonized Philippines, an autonomous community already exists.
They were able to create simple technological development for means of survival. The
civilization of the Philippine Society started with the People of the Pre-Colonial Period that
consist of different tribes coming from different parts of Asia.
A. Community/Livelihood:
Early Filipino settlers have established in different geographic locations of the Philippines
and formed their own community. Some of the tribes settled near the seashores, rivers,
forest, fertile land areas, or caves.
Those located near water resources; look for fish, seashells, and the like. While those
located in land areas, depend on cultivating the land, farming, forestry, etc.
Filipino settlements were called barangays and were headed by a Rajah or a Datu and a
council of advisors. It usually consists of 30 to 100 families.
They built houses called bahay kubo, some built there houses on treetops.
B. Agriculture:
Filipinos then were able to farm, care for the animals, and adapt to their environment.
One example of innovative farming system was made by hand by the Cordilleras, the
Banaue Rice Terraces. It allows the people to grow crops on mountainsides in cold
temperatures, and uses spring water from the top of the mountain as an irrigation
system.
Early Filipinos were able to weave cotton, make glass ornaments and agriculture in
which later on they were able to trade their products to neighboring countries.
C. Mode of Dressing:
Male clothing: Kanggan and bahag
Female clothing: Baro/Camisa and Saya/Patadyong
Filipino settlers wore ornaments usually made up of gold as a protection from entities,
and tattoos which indicates a man’s war record.
D. Religion:
Filipino settlers were described as animistic for they believed in the idea that the world is
inhabited by spirits and supernatural entities, that these entities should be worshiped
and respected through nature.
E. The use of Tools:
Early Filipinos made simple weapons/tools with stones; they developed techniques for
sawing, drilling, and polishing hard stones in which they used for hunting/fishing.
Progressively, they were able to use metal in making these tools/weapons.
F. Transportation/ Trade:
In the 10th to 15th century A.D. Filipinos were able to build boats such as Balangay and
the Caracoa with the use of wooden planks.
These boats were used for trading with neighboring islands/countries such as China and
Vietnam, indicating that regular trade relations was already established during that time.
G. Medicine:
Filipino settlers were able to practice and develop medicines through etracting medicines
from herbs.
H. Writing and Counting System:
Early Filipinos were able to know the year through observing the moon and from one
harvest to another.
Also, they were able to develop a writing system called, Baybayin
They also developed writing tools using leaves, bamboo, and trunks skin
