Biome Speed Dating- Shrublands

Max Weinstock
1. Abiotic Features
Shrublands typically have dry hot summers and cool, moist winters. Shrubland
areas have poor soil with limited nutrients.

2. Location

3. Ecosystem Services
Two important ecosystem services that shrublands provide is good air quality as
well as a habitable climate. Two economic benefits associated with this biome is
high land costs and clean water that can be sold. Shrublands are connected to the
atmospheric component of the carbon cycle through carbon sequestration. Carbon
sequestration is the process involved in carbon capture and the long-term storage
of atmospheric carbon dioxide
4. Animals

One consumer of the shrublands is the Greater roadrunner (Geococcyx

californianus), the bird has long legs which allows it to run down its prey.

Another consumer of the shrubland is the Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus), they
browse shrubs during the dusk and retreat to tree cover during day.

The Kangaroo rat (Dipodomys) is an endangered species of the shrublands. The

animal can change directions rapidly which helps it run form predators. The
Kangaroo rat’s population is declining because its habitat is being seriously
reduced.
Biodiversity of shrublands is above average compared to other biomes.
5. Plants

One producer that thrives in the shrublands is the flowering Banksia

(Banksia Aemula), which has seeds that are encased by a thick resin.

A common plant in the shrublands is the grass tree (Xanthorrhoea), this plant
releases a gas after a wildfire which promotes flower growth.

The Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) is an endangered producer

species part of the Shrublands. Its population is declining due to human
development as well as poaching.

Biodiversity in shrublands compared to other biomes is not as much due to the

fact tall trees can’t grow in shrublands.
6. Main Anthropogenic Threats
Shrublands are one of the most biodiverse biomes as well as the most threatened.
Shrublands are threatened by people living in and around them as well as
wildfires which are common in the area. To protect these lands in California there
is a conservation program which helps protect the animals, and plants by restoring

their habitats with research and education. Wildfires in the shrublands can’t be
stopped due to how naturally dry these areas are.
