Intensive Farming and its Problems

The use of machines, pesticides, fertilisers to improve crop production

What problems can farming cause?

 90s to discuss possible problems related to farming with

your group.
Problems caused by intensive farming
include:

 Eutrophication

 Bio magnification

 Deforestation

 Global warming

 Problems associated with monoculture

Key steps of eutrophication

Answer Q 1 and 2 from the textbook. Pg. 32

WB pg. 23, Q 1 only.
Monoculture
 When farmers growing arable crops often specialise in growing only
one crop to maximise their profits.

Drawbacks:

 It can quickly reduce key nutrients in the soil and lowers biodiversity.

 Repeated ploughing of the soil can cause the soil structure to become
fine and crumbly leading to soil erosion

 Pests spread quickly through a monoculture system as similar plants

are very close to each other.
Rain forests in Malaysia cleared to make way for palm oil crop

Two prong devastation : monoculture and deforestation

Deforestation

 Farmers want to get the highest Effects of deforestation

possible yields from their crops and
land.  Habitat destruction

 Forests are cut down to make

farmland.  Reducing population of
organisms.
 Forests are carbon sinks ( they take in
more carbon dioxide than they
produce).  Reduced biodiversity

 “stored” carbon in them is released

when the crops are used for food or  Increased carbon dioxide
fuel. levels ---global warming
How can we offset the effects of
deforestation?

 Through sustainability

 developing the things we need without destroying habitats is called

sustainable development.

 Sustainable management of rainforests include:

i. Replanting, for every tree that is cut down.

ii. Educating about the benefits of biodiversity associated with rainforests.
iii. Using rubber trees.
iv. Creating national parks to protect biodiversity.
Pesticides –
 Damage food chains by removing
food sources of animals that feed
on pests.

Insecticides:  Some insecticides cause

 Can kill helpful insects that eat cancer in humans.
pests or pollinate plants.

 Can be persistent (do not break

 Selective herbicides may kill
down in the environment) broad leaf plants protecting
wheat (narrow leaves) –
 Can accumulate up the food chain.
many broad leafed plants in
(DDT – falcons- weak egg shells) hedges killed as well.
