Information Technology and Systems - Course Outline
Information Technology and Systems - Course Outline
Perspective:
Over the last few decades, Information Technology (IT) has gradually diffused through the different functions of
organizations. Along with being a support tool to business activities and organizational decision making, IT has become
a crucial implement for attaining strategic business objectives through designing, creating and delivering technology-
enabled products and services. In this course, we will explore both these aspects of IT – first, modelling organizational
decision making using simple technology-based tools and second, understanding the strategic role of information
technology and systems in the organizational context.
The course will be covered in two parallel modules:
To develop the capability of modeling real life problem scenarios where data driven decision making play a
key role.
Module II: Information Systems
Information systems, IT applications and platforms available to organizations today are plenty, yet there seems to be
significant variation in the ability of organizations to extract business value from such resources. This module aims to
introduce students to a broad range of technologies by helping them associate functional aspects of organizations to the
various possibilities that these technologies offer; visualize organizations driven by and designed around technology and
examine larger issues surrounding new-age information technologies.
Pedagogy:
Module I will be conducted through mini-cases, in-class problem-based learning exercises and take-home
assignments involving typical managerial decisions across different organizational functions. Pre-class
tutorials and blended learning tools will be used as preparatory material. Students are expected to participate
in tutorials and complete pre-class assignments.
