Problem Set No1

This document contains 5 problems related to calculating stresses in prestressed concrete beams due to superimposed loads and prestressing. The problems involve calculating: 1) Moments, fiber stresses at midspan for a simply supported beam under uniform load and prestressing. 2) Stresses at points of maximum moment for a simply supported beam under uniform load, concentrated loads and prestressing. 3) Stresses in extreme fibers for a beam under uniform live load, prestressing force applied eccentrically accounting for prestress loss. 4) Maximum prestressing force and safe live load for a beam designed for specified extreme fiber stresses. 5) Top and bottom stresses due to prestressing, maximum

Problem Set No.

Title: Stresses due to super impose loads and prestressing

Solve the following problems:

1. A 500 mm by 760 mm concrete beam of 7.5m simple span is loaded with a uniform load of
4470kg/m including its own weight . The center of gravity of the prestressing tendon is
located 220mm above the bottom of the beam and produces effective prestress of
164,000kg.
a. Calculate the moment due to dead load and live load.
b. Compute the fiber stress in the concrete at the midspan section.
c. Compute the bottom fiber stress in the concrete at the mid span section.
2. A simply supported pre-stressed concrete beam, 9.0m long carries a uniform load of 58kN
per meter including its own weight and two equal concentrated loads of 110kN at its third
point. The size of beam is 460mm by 920mm. If an effective prestress of 1250kN is
produced on a tendon located 0.15m from the bottom of the beam.
a. Calculate the stresses due to dead and live load
b. Calculate the topmost fiber stress of the beam at the point of maximum moment.
c. Calculate the bottom fiber stress in the concrete at the point of maximum moment.
3. A concrete beam having a span of 7.6m has a cross-section of 25cm by 30cm deep which
carries a liveload of 6.6kN/m. It is subjected with a final pre-stressing force of 535kN
applied eccentrically at a distance of 6.35cm. Assume a loss of prestress equal to 15% due
to shrinkage and creep.
a. Determine the stresses due to dead and live load
b. Determine the final concrete stresses in the extreme top and bottom fibers from the
centerline of the beam.
c. Determine the net initial concrete stresses in the extreme top and bottom fibers
from the centerline of the beam.
4. A 300mm by 450mm beam designed to carry a live load having a simple span of 9.0m and
assuming that the maximum allowable stress at top and bottom are 12.0kg/cm^2 and 140.6
kg/cm^2 respectively.
a. Determine the prestressing force that could be applied to the bottom.
b. Determine the safe liveload that can be applied.
c. What is the stress at the top of the beam.
5. A 250mm by 300mm concrete beams is prestressed with a prestressing force of 530kN at
an eccentricity of 60mm. the beam carries a super-imposed load of 50kN/m.
a. What are the top and bottom stresses due to prestressing force?
b. What is the maximum span that the beam should have in order that the no tension
will result in the bottom fibers if all loads are acting?
c. What could the resulting stress at the top of the beam?
