Density and Specific Gravity

The document defines specific gravity as the ratio of the density of an object to the density of water or another fluid. It provides examples of how to calculate the density and specific gravity of various substances by dividing their mass by their volume. Specific gravity can be used to determine if an object will float or sink in a fluid and is a ratio of the density of a substance to the density of air or water.

Specific

gravity
• The ratio of mass to volume
• The degree of compactness of a substance
• The density of a substance can be calculated by dividing
its mass over its volume. (g/mL or g/cm3)
• The ratio of the density of object to the density of water
(fluid)
• Can be calculated by dividing the density of the object
by the density of the water (1 g/cm3) or whatever fluid
surrounding it.

• Can be used to determine whether an object will float or

sink in water or any other fluid.
• Air density = 1.2 g/cm3
• Can be calculated by dividing the density of the gas by
the density of the air (1.2 g/cm3).
1. A block of aluminum occupies a volume of 15.0 mL and
weighs 40.5 g. What is its density and its specific gravity?
2. What is the weight of the ethanol that exactly fills a 200
mL container? Density of ethanol is 0.789 g/mL.
3. A rectangular block (8.4cm x 5.5cm x 4.6 cm) of copper
metal weighs 1896 g. Calculate the density of this copper
sample. Will this block of copper float on water?
4. 28.5 g of iron sample is added to a graduated cylinder
containing 45.50 mL of water. The water level rises to the
49.10 mL mark. Find the density and specific gravity of iron.
5. Calculate the density and specific gravity of ammonia
gas given that 8.9L of the gas weighs 6.8 g.
