RATIONALE
There is currently a perception and real problem among employees facing increasing
amounts of simultaneous activity and numerous demands in the workplace; in other words, the
problem of multitasking. However, the changing demands in the workplace make multitasking
essential and unavoidable. If productivity is the desired outcome, then multitasking should be
implemented to maximize it.
Before making multitasking a mainstay in the workplace, management must consider first
of any potential consequences that may arise. One particular example would be the effect of
multitasking on the employee, such as an increase in stress. This could in effect harm the company
and much worse it can impede productivity. Another concern is the ability for employees to adapt
to the increasing demands, especially if the components that comprise the multitasking ability are
age sensitive. A critical factor here would be whether or not an employee can effectively juggle
tasks without experiencing a significant decrease in performance, and if there is a decrease, what
factors cause it. If either of these cases turns out to be the result of multitasking, then management
should reconsider the training and selection process for employees.
Multiple research presented aims to shed light on this subject. If multitasking is to be used
as a method for achieving an increase in productivity, then it must be explored in an unbiased way.
In doing so, one can learn to understand the benefits of multitasking as well as the undesirable
consequences.
OBJECTIVE
2. Organizational Commitment
3. Employee Morale
Many employees may become compelled to multitask because they have a heavy
workload. Remind managers to give employees a realistic and manageable workload.
During busy season, encourage managers to hire temps to complete maintenance filing or
database work.
Be sure employees take their breaks away from their desks. . If a worker is
overwhelmed by tasks without a lull in their work, they'll feel more pressured to multitask.
To avoid this, encourage your workers to unwind throughout the day.
Employees who take a break in their workstation may be tempted to multitask
things like email or phone messages when they should allow their mind and body to relax.
3. Provide employees with time management
Many employees may try to over multitask in order to compensate for their lack of
time management skills. Provide them with onsite or offsite classes they can participate in
order to improve those time management skills. A more organised employee will mean a
happier and more productive employee in the long run.
1. Selection
Taking time to evaluate the tasks to perform helps ensure productivity and a
successful outcome. Selecting multiple tasks with different priorities and with different
attention demands. Select two tasks, for example, in which one job is more important and
in which the least important task requires less attention. Try not to select jobs with
competing deadlines.
2. Focus
3. Planning
Each task has its own timeline. Break tasks into their parts, scheduling where to put
your attention first and throughout the process of completing jobs. Shifting from one aspect
of one assignment to another becomes more manageable when you can refer to a broad
schedule outlining the elements of your jobs.
IV. CONCLUSION AND/OR RECOMMENDATIONS
Our competitive workplace has encouraged multitasking for years. Recent studies,
however, show that constant multitasking results in decreased focus, memory and learning
impairment, and an increase in stress levels. Human Resource professionals should remind
employees about the dangers of multitasking, and work with managers to help employees
become less overworked, take needed breaks away from their workstation, and improve
their time management skills. These alternatives to constant multitasking will help
employees experience a healthier and less stressful work life.
