Add this game to your list of “ways not to begin a baseball

used four pitchers before the third out finally came. His starter
was All-Star right-hander Ewell Blackwell, he of the frightening

Waco scored 18 runs of its own in a 22-4 win over Beaumont in

including a grand-slam and totaled eight runs batted in before
the Beaumont Exporters could get off the field.

days in Phoenix where he was a four-time all-star and aver-
aged five consecutive seasons (1975 to 1980) with 20 or more
points per game, but he started his career as a Boston Celtics.
Westphal was a member of the 1973-74 NBA Champion Celtics
coached by Hall of Famer Tom Heinsohn. Westphal teamed
with future Hall of Famers Dave Cowens, John Havlicek, Don
Nelson, and Jo Jo White to win that championship over the
Milwaukee Bucks.
Bill Fitch did select Larry Bird as his presenter, and West-
phal selected outside of the Celtics family with Elgin Baylor
and Charles Barkley as his picks. Other Celtic Halls of Famers
on hand were Bill Russell, Tom Heinsohn, Ray Allen, Charlie
Scott, and Don Nelson. A few days before enshrinement, Fitch
released a statement that due to health reasons he would not be
able to attend the weekend’s events.
