Tension Members
1) Select the lightest double angles section placed back to back for a tension member supporting
a service design axial tension load of 400 kN. The member is to be connected at the end to
12mm thick gusset plate between back of the angles by one row of 22mm diameter bolts in
a pattern as shown below. The length of member is 3.2m. Assume the member as main
tension member with limiting slenderness ratio of l r 240 where r I A . Angle sections
are made of A50 steel Fy 345 MPa & Fu 485 MPa .
Select among a) Equal leg angles, and b) Unequal leg angles (for unequal leg angles,
connection is made through longer leg of angles)

2) Design a tension member of bridge truss subjected to a service design tensile force of
1130kN made of W-310 section connected at end to two gusset-plates of 16mm thick by two
lines of 22mm diameter bolts on each flange of W-section (total four lines of bolts on two
flanges). Connection is made through flanges of W-section. The length of the member is
8.5m. There will be at least three bolts in each line. Check selected section for minimum
stiffness criteria assuming as main tension member. Select among W-310 sections.
W-section and gusset-plates are made of A-36 steel ( Fy 250 MPa & Fu 400 MPa ).
3. It is desired to design a column for compression member to support a service design axial
compression of 6490kN using A-36 steel with effective length of 3.65m and they are the same in
both direction. A W360x202 is on hand with a good supply of 25mm thick plates. Design cover-
plates to be connected to the flanges of W-section to enable the column to support the required
load. Ans: PL-445mm x 25mm

4. Assuming axial loads only, select W-section for an interior column of the laterally braced
frame as shown below. Use A-50 steel ( Fy 345 N mm 2 ). Each column section can be used for
one or two stories before it is spliced, whichever seems advisable. Select among W360 depth
group.
Miscellaneous Data:
-Weight of reinforced concrete = 24 kN m3
-Live load on roof = 1.5 kN m2
-Weight of roof finishes = 0.3 kN m 2
-Live load on interior floors = 4.0 kN m 2
-Weight of floor finishes & partition load = 0.7 kN m 2
All joints are assumed to be pinned so as to simplify calculations. Spacing of frames are 9m
on centers. Neglect weight of beams and columns.

Flexural of Beams
1) Determine the maximum service uniform live load that can be carried by simply supported
beam of span 9m in addition to service dead load of 14.6kN/m (including own weight) if
beam is made of rolled section as shown below. Compression flange of beam is only braced
laterally at the end supports. Section of beam is made of A-36 steel Fy 250MPa .

2) A floor system made of reinforced concrete supported by the arrangement of beams and
girders as shown below are to be used for a small industrial building. Design the section of
beams and girders assuming they are simply supported. Use W-sections for both beams and
girders. W-sections are made of A-50 steel Fy 345MPa . Assume full lateral bracing for
compression flange of floor-beams whereas compression flanges of floor-girders are braced
laterally at intersection of beams and girders. Thickness of concrete floor-slab is 150mm.
Use the following miscellaneous data:
-Floor live load = 5kN/m2
-Weight of floor finish= 0.75kN/m2
-Unit weight of concrete weight = 24kN/m3

3) A W-760x256 made of A-50 steel Fy 345MPa has bean specified for use on certain civil
engineering project. By mistake a W-760x161 made A-36 steel Fy 250MPa was shipped
to the field. This beam must be erected today. Assuming that 25mm thick plates made of
A-36 steel are obtainable immediately, select cover-plate to be welded to the flange to obtain
the necessary section. Assume full lateral bracing is supplied for compression flange.

2) Design a beam framing connection for a floor-beam made of W-360x45 to frame into a floor-
girder made of W-460x74. Floor-beam carries a uniform service design load of (dead + live) =
36.5 kN m excluding own weight over span of l 5.5 m . Beam sections and angle-plates are
made of A-36 steel ( Fy 250 MPa & Fu 400 MPa) . Connection is made through four angle-
plates (4L-102 x 102 x tp?). Use 19mm diameter A-325 bolts. Assume friction-type
connection.
Ans.: 2 bolts between web of beam and angle-plate, 2 bolts between angle-plates and web of

3) Determine the number of 19mm diameter A-325X bolts required in the angles and in the
flange of W-section of column as shown below if bearing-type connection is assumed. Double
angle section is subjected to direct-tension. While flange of W-section of column is subjected
to combined action of shear and tension.

(C 180 22) and 12mm thick gusset-plate to develop the full tension load capacity of member
in the lap length of 150mm using fillet-welds with size limited to 8mm. Channel section is
made of A-50 steel ( Fy 345 MPa ) , and welding is made using E-70 electrodes ( Fuw 485 MPa ) .
