EXODUS 1-6
Important Notes (Exodus 1-6)
▪ The Birth of Moses - A man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married and had a
son. They kept him hidden for 3 months but when they could no longer hide him, she
made a waterproof basket and put the baby boy there and laid it among the reeds along
the bank of Nile river. The pharaoh’s daughter saw the baby and paid a Hebrew woman
to nurse the child. When the boy was older, the Hebrew woman brought the child back to
the pharaoh’s daughter and later on was adopted. He was then named as Moses because
he was lifted out of the water. (Moses sounds like a Hebrew term that means ‘to lift out’)
▪ Moses Escapes to Midian – Many years later when Moses had grown up, he visits his
people and saw an Egyptian beating his fellow Hebrew. He then killed the Egyptian and
hid his body in the sand. Pharaoh heard what had happened and he tried to kill Moses,
so Moses went to the land of Midian. When he arrived in Midian he sat down beside a
well and saw that the seven daughters of the Priest of Midian (Ruel or Jethro [Excellency] – it may have
been a title indicating his rank in the tribe
) were being chased away by some other shepherds. Moses then
rescued the girls. Soon, he was invited to Reuel’s (or Jethro) house who gives his
daughter, Zipporah to be his wife. Later on she gave birth to a son and Moses named him
Gershom because he had been a foreigner in a foreign land. (Gershom sounds like a
Hebrew term that means ‘a foreigner there’.) Years passed and the King of Egypt died.
But the Israelites continue to groan under the burden of slavery. They cried out to God
and He remembered His covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel).
**Covenant Promise:
▪ Moses saw the burning bush at Mt. Sinai (or Horeb – the mountain of God). There he
saw the Angel of the Lord appear to him in a blazing fire (this reflects the likelihood that it is God appearing in
a visible form)
. He was instructed by the Lord to rescue the Israelites from the power of the
Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is where
the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live.
▪ Moses was instructed that he will start by calling together all the elders of Israel and tell
them that the God of their ancestors – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, appeared to him, and
will now fulfill His promise.
▪ The Lord knows that the king of Egypt will not let the Israelites go, so He will use Moses
to perform all kinds of Miracles among them. The Lord also promised that He will cause
the Egyptians look favorably on them, and that they will give them gifts, so they will not
leave empty – handed.
▪ Signs of the Lord’s Power - The Lord instructed Moses three miracles - (1) Turn the
Shepherd Staff into snake, (2) put his hand inside the cloak then a skin disease will
appear and disappear (3) turn the water of Nile River into blood], but Moses protested
that he was not good with words so the Lord told him that Aaron will be his spokesman.
▪ Moses Return to Egypt – After telling his father in law that he will return to Egypt, he
took his wife (Zipporah) and sons (Gershom and Eliezer) and also the Staff of God with
him. The Lord instructed Moses to perform before the Pharaoh all the miracles which He
(the Lord) have put in his hand. The Lord will harden the Pharaoh’s heart, then Moses
shall say to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Israel is My son, My firstborn. So I say to you, Let
my son go so that he may serve Me’, and if you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill
your son, your firstborn.”
The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So he went and met him at the
mountain of God (Sinai) and kissed him. Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord with
which He had sent him, and all the signs that He had commanded him to do. Then Moses
and Aaron went [into Egypt] and assembled all the elders of the Israelites; and Aaron
said all the words which the Lord had spoken to Moses. Then Moses performed the signs
[given to him by God] before the people. So the people believed; and when they heard
that the Lord was concerned about the Israelites and that He had looked [with
compassion] on their suffering, then they bowed their heads and worshiped [the Lord].
▪ This chapter is just about how the Pharaoh increased Israel’s labor.
In this chapter,
▪ God reaffirms his covenant to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. According to Him, under its
terms, He (God) promised to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as
foreigners.
▪ Israelites become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery (refer to the Chapter 5
of Exodus)
▪ God instructed Moses to relay to the Pharaoh everything that He said, but Moses refuse
because he claims that he is a clumsy speaker and Pharaoh wouldn’t listen to him.

***Exodus 12:12-13 “12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down
every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment
against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the Lord! 13 But the blood on your doorposts will serve as
a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you.
This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt.”***

in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn

and all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was
heard throughout the land of Egypt. There was not a single house where someone had not
died”(See Exodus 4 Summary.)
***Exodus 12:31 Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. “Get out!” he ordered. “Leave
my people—and take the rest of the Israelites with you! Go and worship the Lord as you have requested.
32 Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave.” 33 All the
Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the land as quickly as possible, for they thought, “We
will all die!”(See Exodus 3 Summary)

When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they
gathered around Aaron and told him to make them gods to worship. Then Aaron took the gold,
melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they worshipped
it.
At this moment, God got angry on what the Israelites are doing. He told Moses to leave him
alone so his fierce anger can blaze against them, and He (the Lord) will destroy them. Moses
begged God to change His mind. The Lord then, changed His mind.
Exodus 32: 15 – 20 (NLV) 15 Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two stone
writings of the Law in his hand. The stones were written on both sides, on one side and the other. 16 The
stone writings were God’s work. The writing was God’s writing cut into the stones. 17 When Joshua
heard the sound of the people as they made noise, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war at the
tents.” 18 But Moses said, “It is not the sound of winning, or the sound of losing. It is the sound of
singing I hear.” 19 As soon as Moses came near the tents, he saw the calf and the dancing. Moses
became very angry. He threw the stone writings from his hands and broke them at the base of the
mountain. 20 And he took the calf they had made and burned it with fire, ground it to dust, spread it over
the top of the water, and made the people of Israel drink it.
Exodus 32: 25-35 (AMP) 25 Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control—for
Aaron had let them get out of control to the point of being an object of mockery among their
enemies— 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s
side, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi [the priestly tribe] gathered together to him. 27 He
said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Every man strap his sword on his thigh and go
back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every
man his friend, and every man his neighbor [all who continue pagan worship].’” 28 So the sons
of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people [of Israel] were
killed that day. 29 Then Moses said [to the Levites], “Dedicate yourselves today to the Lord—for
each man has been against his own son and his own brother [in his attempt to escape
execution]—so that He may restore and bestow His blessing on you this day.”
30 Then the next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go
up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 So Moses returned to the Lord,
and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin [against You], and have made
themselves a god of gold. 32 Yet now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out
of Your book which You have written (kill me)!” 33 But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has
sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book [not you]. 34 But now go, lead the people [to
the place] where I have told you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you; nevertheless, in the day
when I punish, I will punish them for their sin!” 35 So the Lord struck the people with a plague,
because of what they had done with the calf which Aaron had made [for them].
In this chapter, Moses requests to see God’s face but He refused because NO MAN SHALL SEE
HIM AND LIVE.
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms
of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel.”
28 Moses remained there on the mountain with the Lord forty days and forty nights. In all that
time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the Lord wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten
Commandments—on the stone tablets.
29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms
of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the
Lord. 30 So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were
afraid to come near him.
31 But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the leaders of the community to come
over, and he talked with them. 32 Then all the people of Israel approached him, and Moses gave
them all the instructions the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished
speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. 34 But whenever he went into the Tent of
Meeting to speak with the Lord, he would remove the veil until he came out again. Then he
would give the people whatever instructions the Lord had given him, 35 and the people of Israel
would see the radiant glow of his face. So he would put the veil over his face until he returned to
speak with the Lord.
