Industry/Market Questions

Each Industry and Firm may have different areas of emphasis. There is a difference between
Industry and Market (Example: General Motors is in the Auto industry, but you may want to
focus on the SUV, passenger car, or Truck markets).

1. Who are the competitors and market shares?

2. What are the main factors influencing Demand for your Industry’s product?

3. Are there economic considerations for the Industry (for example, recession) that affect
Demand or Supply?

4. Are there other non-economic considerations for the Industry (for example, political)
that affect Demand or Supply?

5. Describe the main costs of production for the Industry (short-run and long-run). Are
economies of scale relevant for the Industry?

6. What are the relevant elasticites?

7. Are the industry elasticities ‘large’ or ‘small’?

(For price-elasticity, look at the number of substitutes, examine the relationship
between changes in prices and revenues; for income-elasticity, what are the
socioeconomic characteristics of the consumers? For cross-elasticities, what are the
relevant substitute and complementary goods? How do changes in their prices affect
your industry?)
