Music Magazine Comparison

For this LA you need to look and different types of music magazine genres. For this I have provided
you with four media packs (PDFs) which basically give you information about each music magazine
and more importantly their target audience.

You will then need to use the example magazine covers and articles to do a comparison of the
similarities and differences between two of them.

I would start with an introduction of the music magazine genre and give examples of the different
magazines and genres they represent.

Then go on to choose two of the magazines below and look at the similar conventions they use for
the cover and article and then any differences that have been tailored to the genre of music and
target audience they each have.

The media packs should come in use with details about the magazines and the target audience.

The magazines are:

Magazine Cover Article

Billboard

Q
The genre of both magazines are that of the music industry because they both focus on the ins and
outs of the music genre. Examples of magazines that represent music is Billboard and Q, some
magazines also mainly represent film and entertainment, examples of this are ‘Empire’ and ‘Total
Film’.

One similarity between the covers of ‘Q’ and ‘Billboard’ is that the central image Is a mid-close up of
a famous female singer, in addition to this the artist in both images have a direct mode of address.
Another similarity is within the articles for both magazines and how the central images relate they
are both of the subject a famous singer in suggestive clothing in the case of the ‘Billboard’ magazine
a dress with a short skirt or as applies with the ‘Q’ article we can infer no clothing at all and this is
done mainly to appeal to the predominantly male audience who buy the print versions of the
magazine. A difference in the covers for ‘Billboard’ and ‘Q’ is that the ‘Q’ magazine has colour and
that is not only from the central image but the bright red used on the cover line whereas the
‘Billboard’ cover central image is in black and white and the only colour is the on the title block. A
difference in the articles for ‘Billboard’ and ‘Q’ is that the ‘Q’ magazine article has one big image of
the artist and the second page is all text which may indicate that the article is more factual and gives
more personal insight into her music and does not require a multitude of images to engage the
reader whereas the Billboard article does have multiple image not to say that the amount of text is
extremely minimal but it is smaller than that of the Q article.

The Billboard magazine is tailored at its audience which is primarily those with a high yearly income
and in terms of gender overall leaning more towards males, through for example in the article
shown above the singer is wearing a short dress which could be to appeal to the male audience also
the subject matter lean’s more towards the personal aspect of the singer as the quotation next to
the singer says “My mom thought I was going to grow up to be a serial killer” and on the cover
underneath Beyoncé’s name the quote is “I want to be an icon” or the cover line “Irving Azoff talks
about his new empire” and as most of these stories are of people working towards fame and
massive success we can infer that this is done to appeal to their readers which as I stated before
have large incomes so may relate to these stories more than the average person. On the other hand
Q magazine is tailored towards its audience which is primarily upper middle class people with strong
interests in music is through for example on the cover above Adele’s name the quote says “If you got
it.Flaunt it…” we can infer that she is talking about how to achieve success in the music business or
how she achieved success and two of the cover lines which say “8 Icons interviewed” and then
“Keith Richards (A member of the Rolling Stones) secret stash” this lines up with the interests of
their readers as it covers music and famous musicians, in addition with this from the layout of the
article on lady gaga which is very formal so we would expect it be a factual article and the image
used which is a mid close up shot helps us infer that we will be given a personal look at her music.
Overall the focus is more on the music than gossip and this is how Q magazine is tailored towards its
audience it focusses on the music their audience enjoys and how it may have been conceived.
