Course Description and Goals


The Arabic language consists of a number of varieties: Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is the official language
of 26 states and used mainly in written texts and formal settings, and various dialects of colloquial Arabic, one of
which is the native language of every Arab. This course teaches the fundamentals of MSA. The goal of this course is
to give students who are already familiar with the Arabic alphabet and the rudiments of Arabic grammar (graduates
of “Introduction to Modern Standard Arabic: Beginners I”) a basic working knowledge of the Arabic verb system,
basic sentence grammar, and basic reading proficiency.

Students will be trained to acquire the following skills:


1. Familiarity with the Arabic root system, regular verb forms and conjugation of the past.
2. Rudimentary knowledge of the imperfect, participles and verbal nouns.
3. The ability to cope with news headlines, using knowledge of grammar and a dictionary.
4. Ability to write out homework in Arabic on the computer/smartphone.

Emphasis is on reading comprehension in MSA.


Each session (four academic hours) will consist of the following main elements: (i) review of homework; (ii) dictation;
(iii) learning a new topic in Arabic grammar; (iv) coping with a new text, using previously learned vocabulary and
grammar; and (v) a quiz on vocabulary, point of grammar or reading comprehension.
