CRITICAL ANALYSIS TEMPLATE

(LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT – WEEK #10-11)

In this critical analysis, you have to type in the font size 12 Times New Roman, space 1.5 and A4
paper. In a critical analysis essay you systematically evaluate an article given including what it does well
and what does it poorly. You must read carefully and may need to look up terms or concepts you are
unfamiliar with or research related reading prior to writing your essay. The following is the template
that you may use for writing your critical analysis essay. Write not more than 1500 words for your
whole essay. Do not forget to write your identity including Name, NIM and class. This essay should
be submitted in WEEK #11
Introduction  State the title of the work and the authors’ name.
 Outline the main ideas of the article and identify the writer’s thesis
 State your own thesis statement and your main idea about the
journal/article

The article “Narratives of intercultural transformation” by Ingrid Adams is


informative and insightful because the author …. (THIS IS THE EXAMPLE OF
INTRODUCTION OF CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY FOR AN ARTICLE)
The article “(TITLE) by (AUTHORS’ NAME) is ………….. because the writer(s)
…….. (Here you may use your own words, but it should show an introduction of
your essay)

Summary  Briefly outline the main ideas of the article


 Should involve who, what, where, when, why and how
 You may also choose to discuss the structure, style or point of view

Analysis  Critically state what you like and do not like about the article
 Explain your ideas with specific examples from the book or other articles

 Assess whether the researcher(s)/writer(s) has achieved their intended goal
 The analysis may look at whether the work is:
- focused, understandable, persuasive, clear, informative
- original, exciting, interesting, well-written
- directed at the appropriate conclusions, and more …
 The analysis is made up of several different paragraphs

Conclusion  Restate your thesis in new words


 Summarize your main ideas if possible with new and stronger words
 Include a call to action for your reader
