I. Short background of the author.

Tita Lacambra-Ayala
She is a writer, poet and multimedia artist. Tita Lacambra Ayala was born in Sarrat, Ilocos
Norte but grew up in Antamok, Benguet. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE)
Major in English, minor in History, at the University of the Philippines in 1953. Tita is one of the
most celebrated Filipino poets in English with her work receiving numerous awards. She has
authored many books in her distinguished career, among them Sunflower Poems (1960), Friends,
The Confessions of a Professional Amateur (prose) and Camels and Shapes of Darkness in a Time
of Olives (poetry).
II. Setting
While the sun is burning away from the mountain gray, the place happened inside the house
where there is chaos in every part of it. Everyone in the house are noisy and all are having a crazy,
routine-less mess of morning.
III. Characters
Mother – the one who eventually got tired and overwhelmed of all the chaos that is happening in
their house and attempted to kill herself. “I am most glad to be alive, to wait the afternoon through
and eat my meals if only grudgingly, suffer the coming of nightfall and view through the
kaleidoscope of domesticity the face of Nick.”
Nick - lover-child-father, husband, pillar and foundation, circus strongman, eternal enemy and
beloved.
Dinky, Bikini and Mocha – the children
Martha - mother's friend that changes her identities with her numerous wigs and minidresses.
IV. Climax of the Story & Resolution
Climax
The mother was tired of everything. She was about to kill herself. Questioning herself if
she did any wrongdoings to experience and put her in that kind of situation.
Solution
She realized that killing herself was never an answer and should be never be an option. Her
children appreciate how blessed they are to have a mother like her. She was glad to be alive and
promise that she will never do that again when she experienced difficulties and disappointments.
V. Theme
Everything is a story of a mother who is having a hard time to control everything in their
house especially when problems occur, they need to be the strongest person to hold back for her
children rely on her. There was also an issue of giving up which leads to attempt of suicide in time
of her difficulties and disappointments.
VI. Point of View

The point of view in the story is first person where it means writing from the author's point
of view or perspective. This point of view is used for autobiographical writing as well as narrative.
VII. Significance of the story and relation to the present time.

One of the big moral lessons woven in the story of "Everything" is that a mother’s
unconditional love can’t be replaced. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family that’s
why if problems occur, they are the strongest person to hold back and we can always rely on them
when we are undergoing certain emotional or physical problems along the way in the challenges
of life. It takes absolute determination to be a mother. In our present time, we forgot that our
mother is a human too and that there are times that they often spend a lot of time worrying about
how they look to their children, and questioning if they are making a good impression. Sometimes
it’s hard for them to control their emotions, even when the situation is really fixable. Your mother
is only human and so rather than focusing on the perfect image, they better figure out how to make
the most of their temper tantrums. While they don’t generally want their children to see they lose
their cool, it’s important that the children know their mother is also human.
Another lesson shown in the film is that suicide does not solve problems, it only creates
worse problems for those you care about. When you reach the breaking point of despair it can
seem the only way to escape is taking drastic action. There are times when it feels like suicide is
the only answer, but that’s untrue. You can be in a very bad place, but in the end, you deserve to
live and see how much better life can get. In today’s society, suicide continues to be a major
problem. Suicide rates are rising, and will continue to rise unless society takes action to better
understand and treat this epidemic. The truth is, we live in a world that is marred by sin, so
difficulties and disappointments are bound to cross our path.
