Ici’ ISO METRIC SCREW THREADS
PART 2 DIAMETER PITCH COMBINATIONS
(First Revision )
1. Scope—Specifies a series of diameter and pitch combinations for ISO metric screw threads in the
diameter range 1 10 300 mm,
2. Choice of Diameter and Pitch
2. The diameters and the associated pitches shall be as given in Table 1.
2.2Choose, for preference, diameters incol1 and, if necessary, in col2and then in col Sof Table 1
2.2.1 Diameter 35 mm and pitch 1.25 mm of diameter 14 mm shall be used only for the special cases in-
dicated in the footnotes.
2 The words ‘coarse’ and ‘fine’ are given in order to conform to usage. No concept of quality shall,
however, be associated with these words.
2.8.1 It shall be understood that ‘coarse’ pitches are the largest metric pitches used in current practice.
2.4 For the diameter (or the diameter range) selected, choose one of the pitches shown on the corresponding
line (or lines) avoiding pitches in brackets.
5 i screw threads finer than those given in Table 1 are found necessary, only the following pitches (given
in mm) shall be used:
3, 2, 1.5, 1, 0.75, 05, 0.35, 0.28 and 0.2.
When selecting such pitches, take into account the fact that theres increasing dificult in complyin
with tolerances as the diameter is increased for a given pitch. It is suggested, for the time being, thal
diameters larger than the following should generally not be used with the pitches indicated:
Pitch Maximum Diameter
mm men
05 22
0.75 33,
1 80
15 180
2 200
3 300
2.6 In cases where it would be necessary to use a thread with a pitch larger than 6 mm, in the diameter range
40 to 300 mm, the pitch 8 mm should be used for preference.
3, Designation
31 A screw thread in conformity with this standard shall be designated by the letter M followed by the
values of the nominal diameter and of the pitch, expressed in millimetres and Separated by the sign *’,
Example : M6 x 0.75
3.2 The absence of the indication of pitch means that a coarse pitch is specified.
Example: M6IS : 4218(Part 2)-1976

EXPLANATORY NOTE
ZThis part convering the basic dimensions for design profiles for ISO metric screw threads was first
published in 1967. In view of the revision of Part, all the existing and additional sizes have been brought
in ine with 180 261-1973 "ISO general purpose metric screw threads —General plan’. All dimensions have.
been rounded to three decimal places.
‘This part is one of a series of parts on ISO Metric Screw Threads, The different parts are as under:
Part 1 Basic and design profiles
Part 2 Diameter pitch combinations
Part 3 Basic dimensions for design profiles
Part 4 Tolerancing system
