This standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 129 ‘Glass in building’ (Secretariat: Belgium).
The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Materialprüfung (Mate-
rials Testing Standards Committee), Technical Committee 09.29.00 Flachglas‑Produkte.
Previously published German versions of European Standards on glass in building have used varying Ger-
man terms for the English term „soda lime silicate glass“. Working committee 09.29.00 therefore stipulated
that with immediate effect only the term „Kalk‑Natronsilicatglas“ shall be used, being defined as the overall
term in DIN 1259‑1 ‘Glass types and classes – Terminology’, September 2001 edition.
In order to present the German title of DIN EN 14179‑1 more clearly, and to harmonize it with previously
published standards, the English term „heat soaked thermally toughed soda lime silicate safety glass“ has
been translated as „heißgelagertes thermisch vorgespanntes Kalknatron‑Einscheibensicherheitsglas“, with
„Silicat“ being consciously omitted.
In the body of the standard, „soda lime silicate glass“ has been consistently translated as „Kalk‑Natron
silicatglas“.

The European Standards referred to in clause 2 of the EN have been published as the corresponding
DIN EN Standards with the same number.

This European Standard was approved by CEN on 2005‑05‑19.
