Connotation and Denotation Lesson Plan

Connotation vs Denotation

Language Arts Lesson Plan

Teacher Name: Ms. Montgomery

Grades: 6-8

Common Core Standards:

Acquisition of Vocabulary: Recognize the importance and function of figurative


language.
Apply knowledge of connotation and denotation to determine the meaning of
words.
Reading Applications: Literary Text:
Identify and analyze how an author uses figurative language, sound devices and
literary techniques to shape plot, set meaning and develop tone and to explain
ways in which the author conveys mood and tone through word choice, figurative
language, and syntax.

Describe Level Of Prompting Used (If Applicable):


 Teacher will give praises and assistance for guidance to students
 Teacher will give visual cues and verbal prompts to students to assist them in
comprehending and following oral directions and instructions

Materials:
Pens and Pencils
Teacher made document (two poems by two different authors)
Paper
Interactive White Board or a projector
Power Point Presentation
Teacher made document (Compare and Contrast graph organizer)

Activity #1

 Teacher will ask students to fill out the KWL on the key terms, connotation
and denotation, for the first ten minutes of class.
 Teacher will ask students to share their responses with the class.
 Teacher will play the video segment with no instruction on what to look for.
 Teacher will play the video segment in class asking the students to pay
close to the different meanings of words.
 Teacher will play the video segment in class again asking the students to
write down the words that are portrayed by people.
 After the video exercise, teacher will ask students to pair up with a peer
and share their list of words in a discussion.

Activity #2

 Teacher will engage the students in a class discussion by reviewing the


Power Point Handout which defines the key words, connotation and
denotation.
 Teacher will ask students think about the word, cockroach, and asks them
to list their definition of the word on paper. Then, teacher will post the
definition of the word, cockroach, on the Interactive White Board or on a
projector. The definition came from the dictionary.

Activity #3

 Teacher will read both poems aloud as the students follow the reading by
looking at their own copy of the handout. Teacher will read each poem
with periodic stops to check the students’ understanding of the poems.
 After the reading, teacher will assign the students with a peer to work with
in filling out the Compare and Contrast worksheet.
 Students will write the denotative characteristics of the cockroach that
both poets include in their poems on the Compare and Contrast
worksheet.
 When finish, each group will share their response with the class.
 Teacher will wrap up the lesson by asking the students the following
questions:

Which poet succeeds in giving roaches favorable connotations?

Which poet comes closer to expressing your own feelings about roaches?
