CHAPTER 1 – CHANING CONCEPTS, NATURE, PURPOSE, AND

TYPES OF CURRICULUM

Curriculum is a course of study which contains a body of subject matter approved for
teaching in schools. The purpose of curriculum is to serve as guide for teachers on how
to implement the teaching-learning process inside the classroom. Curriculum is define in
different ways and has different characteristics which include the learning experiences
of learners, subject matter, courses, etc. There are also different types of curriculum
that helps operate the school. These are recommended, written, taught, supported,
assessed, learned, and hidden curriculum.

To come up with a good curriculum, changes are needed from time to time. It evolves
to cope up with the demand of society and to provide a better and quality education for
all.

Curriculum includes everything that’s why it is complex. There would be no school

without curriculum in the sense that curriculum is the heart of the school system and is
now part of our everyday life.
CHAPTER 5 – CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING

21st is a technology based century. As the world changes, the curriculum also has to
change and develop everything including the programs of study, learning and teaching
resources, lesson plans, assessment of students, teaching styles, teacher qualifications,
and the like to cope with the innovations of society. That is why; some curriculum
developers planned, designed and introduced different models of curriculum.

The AIM (Access Inclusion Model) which is a child-centred model was introduced by
Dr. Katherine Zappone, T.D. to ensure that children with disabilities can access the
Early Childhood care and education (ECCE) program.

Taba’s Inverted Model was introduced also by Hilda Taba which focuses on the
student’s needs and a teacher-centred model; because Taba believes that teachers are
aware of the students needs hence they should be the one to develop the curriculum.

Tyler’s Ends-Means Model by Ralph Tyler. This model is a teacher-centred also in the
sense that it maximizes the teacher power and control because it is the teacher who
establishes the objectives and establishes them in advance of selecting learning
experiences.

The Oliva Model was introduced by Peter F. Oliva which is a deductive model
includes the statement of philosophy, student and societal needs.
