LP

This lesson plan teaches students how to graph linear inequalities in two variables. Students will work in groups to solve and graph examples, and learn key terms like boundary lines and shaded half-planes. They will practice applying these skills to graph various inequalities on grid paper and online.

LESSON PLAN IN LINEAR INEQUALITIES IN TWO VARIABLES

Competency: Graphs linear inequalities in two variables. (Code: M8AL-IIa-3)

I. Objectives:
At the end of the 60-minute period, the students are expected to:
1. Differentiate between mathematical expressions and mathematical equations;
2. Illustrate linear inequalities in two variables;
3. Foster teamwork in all group activities; and
4. Graph linear inequalities in two variables on the coordinate plane.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Linear inequalities in two variables
References: Mathematics for the 21st Century Learners pp. 194-200
Intermediate Algebra pp. 36-37
Materials: Activity sheets, graphing paper, laptop, projector
Learning Strategy: 4A’s (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction and Application)

III. Learning Strategies

1. Routinary Activities
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking of Attendance
2. Review
 What are the methods in solving and graphing a linear equation?

3. Motivation (2 minutes)
Match Column A to Column B.
Column A Column B

1. The sum of the numbers of X and Y a. 3 (x/y)

2. The square of the sum of X and Y b. 2 (x + y)
3. The sum of the squares of x and y c. (x + y) - 9
4. Nine less than the sum of x and y d. (x + y)^2
5. Nine less the sum of x and y e. 9 - (x + y)
6. Twice the sum of x and y f. x + y
7. Thrice the quotient of x and y g. 3xy
8. Thrice the product of x and y h. x - y/ 4
9. The difference between x and y i. 8 + xy
divided by four
10. Eight more than the product of x j. x^2 + y^2
and y

A. Activity
 The class will be grouped into 4 or 5. Provided with the activity sheet and grid paper, each group will
solve and graph the given equation. The first group who will complete the task will be the winner
and they will pick another group to present their work. In the activity, they will solve and graph the
linear equation by using slope-intercept method.
(Follow up question: How did you did you graph the linear equation in two variables?)
 After the presentation, the teacher will present the terms in dealing with linear inequality and will
give another activity to be done by group.
 To solve an inequality is to find the values that satisfy the given inequality. Before solving, you
need to know first the terms in dealing with solving linear inequalities.
1. Boundary line – is a line that divides the Cartesian plane into two half planes.
a. Use a solid boundary line if the inequality involved is either a ≥ or ≤ symbol.
b. Use a broken boundary if the inequality involved is either a > or < symbol.
2. Half plane that contains the solution (shaded):
a. Upper half shaded – y >mx + b
Y ≥mx + b
b. Lower half shaded – y <mx + b
Y ≤mx + b

B. Analysis
 What are the terms to be considered in dealing with solving linear inequality in two
variables?
 What is the difference in solving between linear equality and linear inequality in two
variables?
 What method did you use in solving the linear inequality in two variables?
 Why does the graph shaded in that (see Fig. in the activity) part of the half?
 How did you graph linear inequality in two variables?
 How did you solve the inequality?

C. Abstraction
 How do you describe the graph of linear inequality in two variables?
 How did you determine the solutions of the linear inequality in two variables?
 How did you solve the linear equality?
 How did you solve the linear inequality?
 How did you find the activity?
 Were you able to graph linear inequality in two variables?

D. Application
 Using the spinner, the teacher will randomly call a student. Once a student is chosen,
the teacher will show the inequality, he will answer verbally given 1 minute only. After 1
minute the student will check his/her answer by graphing the inequality on the
GeoGebra app.
IV. Assessment
Graph the following linear in equality in two variables in a grid paper.
1. y> 2x – 3
2. 2x + y> - 2
3. y< 4x – 2

V. Assignment
Describe each of the following by means of inequalities.

1. all the points to the right of the y – axis

2. all the points on and above the graph of y = x
3. all the points on and to the left of the graph of y = x + 2
