Performance Standard: The learner prepares advocacy materials that promote healthy family

WHAT TO KNOW
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
A. Discuss intelligently a brief information about cigarette smoking.
B. Recognize the possible effects of cigarette smoking to a person’s health.
C. Create a slogan portraying the bad effects of cigarette smoking.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: The Dangers of Cigarette Smoking
Sub-topic: Effects of smoking in the body and the three kinds of smoke produced
by cigarettes.
B. Materials: projector, laptop, slide tech, cartolina, small box, marker, speaker,
and extension wire

communicable disease and they will post their answer in the chart provided below.

Guide Questions:

1. How did you categorize each disease? - Diseases are spread from one person to
other while non-communicable diseases is a
medical condition or disease which is non-
infectious.
2. How can a person acquire such disease? - We can acquire such disease
- By lack of immunity.
- Acquire from person to person.
- Poor sanitation
- Bad healthy lifestyle

3. How can we prevent this disease? -We can prevent this kind of diseases by
having an exercise regularly, eat healthy food,
good hygiene, not to share personal items on.

Activity 1.
“SLIDE PICS”
Directions:

 The teacher will discuss about the cigarette, tobacco, and smoking.
 The learners will listen attentively and participate in the class discussion.

What is cigarette? Tobacco? And smoking? - Cigarette is a thin cylinder of finely-cut
tobacco rolled in paper for smoking.

- Tobacco is a tall, leafy plant, originally


grown in South and Central America,
but now cultivated throughout the
world.

There are many species of tobacco but


“Nicotiana tabacum” or called common
tobacco is preferred for producing present
day cigarettes.
- Smoking is a practice in which a
substance is burned and the resulting
smoke breathed in to be tasted and
absorbed into the bloodstream.
When you smoke cigarette, you will taste the
substance of cigarette and absorbed into the
bloodstream. It means the substance will flow
to your heart and body.

According to the study done by National


Youth Commission (NYC) two (2) out of five (5)
Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old
smoke cigarette.

In the year of 2011 in a study conducted by the


group of anti-tobacco, ten (10) Filipinos die
every hour because of tobacco related
disease.

Guide questions:
1. Based on the study conducted by the NYC, what could be the possible effect if the Filipino
teenagers aged 13 – 15 years old smoke cigarette?
2. What do you think are some of the ways that our government can do to discourage the
people in buying cigarette?
3. What is the purpose of cigarette ban in many of the stores in our community?
Activity 2.
“TEXT TWISTER”
Directions:

 The teacher will post jumbled letters about the effects of smoking on the body.
 The learners will arrange the jumbled letters for each item to decipher the words. Hint
are provided below the jumbled letters.

trachea into the lungs.

Hint: damaged air sacs in the lungs.

7. N E A O N I P M U - PNEUMONIA
Hint: infection of the lungs.

8. T A S H A M - ASTHMA
Hint: a chronic disease which affects the
airways.

9. R E N C A C - CANCER
Hint: a group of diseases which makes body
cells grow uncontrollably.

Guide Question:
1. What are the top 5 common diseases of smoking cigarette?
2. What are the diseases that affects our cardiovascular system?
3. What are the diseases that can damage the air sacs in our lungs?

Activity 3.
“LECTURE”
Directions:

 The teacher will discuss the three kinds of smoke produced by cigarette.
 The learners will listen attentively and participate in the class discussion.

There are three kinds of smoke produced by
cigarette,
1. Mainstream smoke
2. Sidestream smoke
3. Third-hand smoke

What is Mainstream smoke? - It refers specifically to the smoke that a


smoker directly inhales.

How about the side stream smoke? - The smoke that comes out of the lighted end
of a cigarette or pipe.

This is also called second-hand smoke


(SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke
(ETS). This is more dangerous than
mainstream smoke.

How about the Third-hand smoke? - This smoke left for a long time on sofa,
beddings, pillow and other objects.
This smoke also called residual tobacco
smoke (RTS) and settles along with dust
and can last for months.

Class be careful also in third-hand smoke


because it’s still contains harmful chemical
and carcinogens.

Guide Questions:
1. What can you advice to a person who is smoking cigarette in public places?
2. What could be the possible cause if you are always exposed to side stream and third hand
smoke?
3. What are the things that you can do to avoid side stream or second hand smoke?

b. Analysis
“BOX-SAN MO!”
Directions:

 The teacher will present a box with questions about the topic being discussed.
 The learners will pick and answer one question inside the box.
Questions:

1. Why side stream smoke or second hand - The sidestream smoke is more dangerous

 Each group will make a slogan portraying the bad effects of cigarette smoking.

2. Do you think that you can encourage other people to stop smoking by making that slogan?
3. How can you say that this activity is effective in informing people about the dangers of

1. Draw a poster in 1/8 illustration board with a theme “Dangers of Cigarette Smoking”
2. List down the policies and laws regarding cigarette smoking.
3. List down the three types of alcohol.
